I guess I always have considered myself a "hardcore gamer", though the line between hardcore and casual is becoming so blurry. I've been playing video games since I was 4, my mom had a NES with Batman and Tetris. I was able to make it to the Joker's level (never beat it) by age 5, as well as rack up 200 lines routinely on Tetris before we sold the machine in 1994.
But I don't think any of that defines what a "hardcore gamer" is, at least not as it applies to everyone. I hate to offer more subdivisions on the issue, but I feel that we have to define a "hardcore gamer" by the time period they first grew up and gestated with video games. Then we can do as someone has earlier in this thread, and make a list that has certain common gamer events from that era. You could even go further and break it down by console generation.
For example, the 90's gamer questionnaire might look like this:
-Did you ever do the double warp flute trick in SMB3?
-Do you remember the first time you used Zero in the MMX series?
-Do you remember where you were when you saw Aerith die?
These are only three examples. And the way to determine whether or not you fit the definition is how each answer resonates with you. If these examples hold memories that are fond and meaningful, you probably were a "hardcore 90's gamer" You'd probably need longer lists than what I have posted to truly be satisfied, but if a definition is needed, I think this would be the best barometer.
