Describe yourselves, what makes gaming EPIC for YOU; those perfect moments when it's the most rewarding and entertaining!

Is it general convention of the industry that has kept you a gamer for all this time?
Is it a single defining moment of an all-time great title?
Is it an entire game, maybe your favorite, from start to finish?

Just whenever I beat a particually challenging game. The sense of achievement that I get, there's really nothing else like it!

IMERSION, in RPGs, paced action in FPS's, you get the point, all games require different splices of epicness.

I'll take this opportunity to point out something that's been bothering me for ages. Epic does not think what most gamers seem to think it does.

Epic is a narrative form of poetry written in a certain style to describe events, often from legend, not a matter of size, scale, grandeur, difficulty or what have you. I can accept that it's alright using the word epic to describe a campaign in Europa Universalis 3 or something like it, as there can be a narrative in that.

Now get off my lawn and stop misusing the language! :D

Staying up all night playing Dark Messiah: Might and Magic on hard difficulty with metal blaring through my headphones.

That was pretty epic...

When I get together with one of my friends and we play a co-op shooter. Normally when I'm by myself I'm average or shit, but when I'm with him my skeels improve.

Also taking a rather long shot in New Vegas is quite extraordinary.

Things like this happen once in a while for me:
(This was taken from my facebook page so please excuse what could be considered a corny re-telling...)
So I was playing Ace Combat 6 on Hard and in an intense dog fight with a large number of F-16's. I'm flying the Mirage-2000 and on the tail of a poor sap. The lock box lines up, I hear the sound telling me to fire and as I'm about to let loose...my controller's stick jams. I'm suddenly pulled to the left and spinning out of control, stalling. The damn Xbox 360 controller's stick wont budge and I see as my altitude drops like a meteor. The grounds closing in and while I've resigned myself to have to replay the level, a miracle! The stick comes free and with only 300ft left before I pound into the Earth I pull up. I'm literally crushing the controller in my hand trying to get the engine to give its all. As I pull up, engine screaming like a rocket the sky fills my screen and four F-16's fill my HUD. I lock two and fire my missiles, watching them turn into fireworks. Before blowing right past and between the last two I let one feel my guns, turning my head just in time to see him turn into a ball of flames. Now to the last guy. Up and over and on my way down I realize that I'm to close to the enemy fighter. I hastily line up my sights on him and fire away, holding down the trigger, I blink...

...and then just sky. I've blown right through him and his planes debris. I pause the game and take a minute. The only thing I can say is that was just epic. As I go on to finish the mission, the video replay was like a movie. It was so awesome that even my old man got a kick out watching it xD
In the entry I failed to mention that I had the AC4 and AC4A OST's playing lol. Felt freak'n epic!

There's always something epic about seeing 4 gears standing, refusing to be beaten, Lancers firing in one solid line of locust pulping lead.

A team game where people actually work as a team.

Communication, healers, coordinated attacks, having a team that isn't made up of five Snipers, three Spies, two Pyros and a Scout.

My dictionary adds the extra meaning 'heroic' to epic which is applicable to certain uses in modern language. That's from a dictionary 20 years old too. I agree though, i wish people would learn to use the language correctly. Not read any new dictionaries for a while but with some of the new bullshit words they have been adding recently it wouldn't suprise me to know they had changed the meaning of epic.

Anyone here Tanorexic? :p

Fable: The Lost Chapter, taking twenty minutes deciding between my sister and a sword

Mass Effect 2, making it through the suicide mission without losing a soul

Games that grab you and won't let go, losing yourself for hours.
That's what makes gaming for me

I think, out of all the complete misuses of language this generation has had the displeasure of coming up with, that using "epic" to describe a heightened sense of euphoric amazement is probably the absolute least offensive of them all.
There is certainly a truth in that! And that makes it all even worse. :)

Heroism is certainly a big part of it, but the heroism should really be in a longer narrative. I mean, while I feel like a god damn golden hero in when I manage to C4 a tank in Bad Company 2 it's not really epic. It's seven kinds of awesome, but not epic. :)

I also looked up tanorexic. God damn you for making me see that! It's hilariously awful.
