I guess Black Ops would be the current big game, however you may as well wait for Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3 in Oct/Nov if you're looking for newer games.

TF2 is brilliant, and it went free not too long ago. The only thing is that servers use VAC. Unless VAC checks your ip you could just create a new steam account just for TF2. If it does check then you are out of luck.

You could buy Battlefield Bad company 2 if you thought COD needed vehicles, destructable terrain and lots of smoke and explosions. You need a fairly decent PC though. Something that can run MW2 on high graphics with a respectable frame rate.
You could also give Crysis 2 a go. Apparently its not bad for MP.

Otherwise no clue. TBH Cod, Bad company 2 and Halo are the really popular fps games at the moment.
