Tomorrow is my college move-in day. I'm bringing my desktop with me to my dorm. Anything I should do to safely transport it there? I'm thinking of just putting my case (with all components in it) back into the box it came in, between the foam placeholders and with the plastic bag covering it. Same deal for my monitor.

Anyone done this before? Anything else I need to do?

I just disconnect the monitor/ mouse/ keyboard and put it in the floorboard behind the drivers seat and have never had a problem transporting it. Everything inside should be mounted, so I don't see a problem. I didn't even use boxes. LOL

Same here, fits in the back footwell quite nicely.

If you have a big monitor just put it on a seat with the belt around it.

Be paranoid. Lock your car every time you leave. I've run several conventions far from home. Lock your car. Every time.

Consider laying it on its side if it has a massive aftermarket heatsink but apart from that you'll be fine.

The foam placeholders should be sufficient. Just put it somewhere on the car floor where it won't move too much. It's important to make sure that it doesn't get overheated on the way, so I wouldn't use a plastic bag. Also, don't leave it in the car.

When you get there, put it in a relatively cool (but dry of course) place so that it cools a bit before turning it on.

Are you dragging your belongings behind the car perhaps?
Because otherwise just stick everything in a box and you are done.

Or perhaps not, it seems some people here transport their stuff through the sun apparently, so perhaps some heat shielding and advanced deflector arrays could come in handy.

Echoing most of the opinions already expressed. When I moved at the beginning of July, I just put the tower in the boot and it was fine. Make sure it won't slide around and you're golden.

Like many others have said, just shove it in the trunk or backseat of your car. It'll be perfectly fine.

I mean, I've seen a guy lug his gaming desktop onto a flippin' train while travelling home from college. Surely if he could do that and have it all make it in one piece, it shouldn't be too hard to just shove yours in your car and not need to worry. =P

As the others have said, pop it back in it's box and you should be fine. If you're really paranoid, before you plug it in, open it up and give you cards, RAM ect a push to be sure they're firmly seated in their slots and haven't been shaken loose.
