Yeah what's up with the last sentence? Had he committed the crimes before he was paralyzed? Or somehow while he was paralyzed? Maybe it was verbal domestic abuse. Or it was after he could walk again. But that's even wierder. He regains use of his muscles and his first thought is "I think I'll go beat up my wife"?

Just a suggestion:-
Guy is in a bike accident, and is severely injured in his nerves but not really rendered paraplegic.
Guy gets bitten by spider, needing hospital treatment.
Guy is surrounded by medical staff, who notice there is more life in his legs than there should be (maybe they twitched occassionally?)
Medical staff get guy help, doctors treat him and to teach him to walk again.

To sum it up.
Man of varying degree of paralysis gets bitten by spider (or something) and goes to hospital. Hospital realizes his paralysis can be treated, treat him. He walks again.
It'd be like if a guy has cancer and gets shot. The operating doctors see the cancer and remove it. Headline reads "Bullet cures cancer".
It's just shoddy reporting.
