Because DMC2 is inferior to DMC1 in almost every way I can think of. The soundtrack is great, I will admit that, but the combos don't flow anywhere near as nicely, the controls are a little jerkier, the graphics are worse, and the story? Oh don't even get me started on the story. It's completely wonky. Replacing a legitimately interesting antagonist like Mundus or Vergil with some bloke with DBZ hair who is trying to
summon a demon named Argosax or something.
Mainly, though, it's how they changed the combat. Definitely for the worst.

I found 2 a great deal easier and less memorable than 1 or 3, the others that I've played. I've finished 2 on DMD and yet I get slaughtered on 1 when I play on Hard. 3 is, I would say, slightly easier than 1 but still a lot harder than 2.
Another point would be the almost complete reversal of Dante's personality with no explanation. In 1 he's quick to taunt the phantom & griffon but the sequel all but does away with pre-boss dialogue, bringing it down to a 'Here's a big ugly bad guy, kill it because it's there' kind of situation.
I think the team originally in charge of 1 wasn't present for 2? I can't remember but something was definitely different.
all I remember about DMC2 was not really knowing what was happening, and when I got to the final boss, I didn't even realize it was a final boss.. when I beat him, I expected to get to a "Next Mission" screen, but i just got to a Game Over screen.
