I have my old Phat PS3 sitting in a closet too. It didn't get the YLoD, it just stopped reading disks, and then in my stupid attempt to fix it (it was past its warranty) I ruined it to never again read any disks at all. Besides that, everything else on it still works, so I'm really reluctant to throw it out. I mean, what if I could get its disk drive repaired? Then it will be back to normal.

Otherwise, my mum keeps trying to get me to throw it out, but I just can't. I've grown attached to the poor thing.

Not too long ago, I posted a thread here asking what I should do now that my fat PS3 (40GB model) got the YLOD (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.828341-Welp-my-PS3-died-on-me-What-do).

Ultimately, I decided that I'm gonna buy a new 250GB PS3 super slim since they're now pretty cheap and apparently consume less power and have a newer CPU/GPU manufacturing process than the fat models.

I used a 320GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue HDD in my old PS3, and am thinking of taking that out and using it in my new super slim PS3. I'm aware that you have to reformat it, but I have my game saves backed up on my flash drive and PC anyway.
My PS+ subscription expired in August, so if I renew it before 6 months are up, I assume I can get my cloud saves back (goddamn Demon's Souls and Dark Souls for not letting you back up your saves otherwise).

So, if I do that, I'll be left with a hard drive-less, YLOD'd fat PS3 that will probably gather dust in my closet. What can I do with it? Recycle it? Sell it for parts? Smash it to bits with a hammer?
Smashing it with a hammer might sound fun, but it'll be waste of time and money. I think you should sell it for what it's worth.

You can still play digitally downloaded games no? And watch netflix , that alone may be worth keeping it .

OT: Make a youtube video centered around destroying it .

I could, but it doesn't have any on it. I have a new PS3, so I'd rather just download games to that instead.

And no, I'm in NZ, so no Netflix for me.

If you ever do destroy it make sure you tape it and make a hoax about destroying a perfectly fine PS3.
