My opinion on Latin? "Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum videtur." Stole this one from TV Tropes, and it means "Everything said in Latin sounds profound". It's kind of cool, really - Latin can make what you say more ominous, just like French makes it sexier and German makes it evil or badass.

My father knows it, but i do not... yet.

I've got nothing against Latin. Really, I've been meaning to learn it at some point, but it never seemed overly important, so I kept putting it off. One day, maybe.

From my brief dribble into law studies I did pick up from a french law book the term Sine qua non meaning "without which not". A condition representing 'that without which there is nothing'.

Pretty cool!. Sadly though I don't think I'll master the language any time soon and besides Sanskrit somehow catches more of attention than Latin.

I took Latin in high school. It was hard and I didn't get it but I still loved it. I also want to learn German but I digress.

Any way Latin really helps with one's command over the English language.

Plus Latin phrases and words are used a lot in the Warhammer 40,000 setting.

I picked up a lot of Latin words from singing them in choir. It's mostly biblical phrases like "Agnus dei qui tollis peccata mundi" (lamb of God who absolves the sins of the world?), or stuff you'd hear from sacred works like "Dies irae dies illa" (day of wrath, day of judgment). I have no concept of the grammar, which I'm told is insane, but I can still trick a lot of people into thinking I speak it. I was pissed that my high school didn't offer it. Now that I'm in university it's going to have to duke it out with German and Italian, which are admittedly more relevant to my studies.

Latin is amazing. Its weird when you're reaading letters or poetry or whatever from the first or second century BC! Its so old! And yet people can still read it!

You've probably guessed that I study Latin.

Latin is an incredibly awesome language. All other languages are weak against its epicness!

Sadly, despite two years of Latin class in High School, I cannot speak it at all. Or read it...although to be fair, I never really could do that without a glossary at hand. Hooray for guess and check!
[sup]damn those declensions, I say. Damn them to hell![/sup]
I used to learn Latin, but that was 3 years ago. I was pretty good, could read it passably, and hell, I even enjoyed it, despite my hate of conjugation and declensions. However, when it came round to choosing GCSE subjects, it lost out to Spanish, (cos Spanish has no declensions)

The poetry of Catullus is beautiful - he's one of my favorite ancient poets, given his Epicurean philosophy. Plus he talked a lot of trash. He's like the great-great-great-great-granddaddy of the diss track.

Latin is near and dear to my heart. Years ago, when I worked at a Jesuit mission, I used to give lessons in gregorian chant, viva voce. The downside is that that's now the only way I can really sing at all - so when I get on the mic in Rock Band, I end up sounding like Pavarotti.

Phrases like 'cogito ergo sum' by Descartes are engraved in my memory, Latin has a profound effect on anything it touches. Ancient languages are always compelling, and I love reading Latin texts (but mostly sayings recently). Who hasn't heard 'Veni, vidi, vici' before?
I frown at teachers or teaching methods that cause students to 'hate' their ancient language classes.

I learned it back in school but forgot pretty much everything.
However, I'm still confronted with this zombie-language in everyday life because, you know, med student and all that shit.

I'm not a religious person.
but I have been in choirs all my life- religious or otherwise.

say what you will about the context, but all of my favorite latin comes from the old religious hymns and baroque pieces I learned in choir- more than anything it just rolls of the tongue beautifully.

I mean,
Angelus domini, nuntiavit Mariae, et concepit de Spiritu Sancto
hell, the entire Ave Maria!

I use Latin nearly daily due to the fact that I'm taking my second year of it and am also part of the last class in my school to take it, the teachers retiring. It's nice to know and makes figuring out a lot of other languages easier, but good god it is confusing. Quid Pro Quo I suppose. (One thing for another)
