I probably only use like one tenth of my brain, then.
I cannot listen and do anything else at the same time.
It is impossible for me.

I don't even use half.

just keep nodding and going 'oh yeah' at regular intervals.

the missus is the same when I'm explaining to her why Gordon's HEV suit is so important

Half a brain is way more than I expected would be used for listening, considering all the things involved in coordinating the functions of a living creature.

So Women use the creativity side of the brain when listening?

Well that explains why their reactions apparently bare no relation to what is actually said...
The right side of the brain is also responsible for a lot of emotional functions if I'm not mistaken. So this study could imply that men are generally concerned with facts when listening, while women have more of a balance between facts and feelings.

Take that how you will internets.

I wish this would stop women from making really lame jokes about how inadequete we all apparently are to them.

Wait, men listen? That alone is newsworthy.

So you're saying that women are more emotional than men?
Well, duh
Duh, indeed. "Women are more emotional" seems like as good an explanation as any for the result. Men are capable of communicating without their right hemispheres being shocked into stimulation, so whatever women are using it for - while potentially beneficial - can't be strictly necessary.

Anyway, they were being read a novel in the experiment, so the results are starker than they would be in real life. Men aren't bricks, they do have emotional responses for things that they feel somehow involved in. I'm guessing that if you told a guy that his wife/girlfriend was cheating on him the right side would flare up more.

It's because we're so much smarter half of ours is equivalent to all of theirs.

Bless.

Did they say what novel it was? I mean, if it were a Terry Pratchett book, about lesbian sex, or Marit Larsen, I'm pretty certain both sides of my brain would flare up. But if it were Twilight they were reading out...

I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you, I was too busy watching the game. Now go get me a beer.

I'll admit, when I'm engaged in something else, having someone (male or female) trying to get my attention and carry on a conversation with me is an exercise in futility. But captive-audience? I'm listening. To suggest otherwise is BS.

Sorry, I didn't read the entire text. I suppose it is because I am a man, and we men know when to ignore crap.

Did you know that there were many debates over same-age suffrage where politicans would actually bring forth arguments stating women have smaller brains and therefore mature at a later age?

Why listen with all your brain if you can listen just as well with half? That stinks of excess work to me, not terribly manly if I do say so.
For once, we actually agree on something.

Could it have been the material, i mean if your gonna put a tape on of the scarlet letter or ....(forgot which novel i was gonna say to that one) then you really think the guy is gonna listen. Now i think they should put on a tape of madden talking randomly about sports and see if women can process his language better then men.
I would listen to that. I happen to like Nathaniel Hawthorne. But put on The Horse Whisperer, and you can expect to flatline that man's brain activity. They'd be dragging him downstairs to the morgue.

But you present an interesting argument: perhaps the subject matter was more interesting to the female than the male. Maybe they should test using various sound clips to see what the change in brain activity looks like across subject matter. (I'd bet that you're right; sports discussion will most likely show higher levels of brain activity in men than women, while a novel or something would show the reverse.) I'd like to see what my brain would look like under this experiment, since just about any incoming information sparks my imagination.

Well, think about it this way. Using your entire brain for something would be like composing a letter whilst using every key on your keyboard at once. You use seperate parts for different things, so that's about it.
