That 10% thing is bullshit, you know that right?
It was based on someone saying "we don't use our entire brain"
Then hell broke loose...
I imagine it's no more, or less, bullshit than this spurious "test" of a paltry 40 people.
No, it's far far more bullshit than this test.

Sure, the test isn't perfect, and it certainly could have used a larger sample, but it still happened.

The 10% of the brain thing doesn't even have that, the idea is based upon a complete misunderstanding of the brain and the tests we use to study the brain. A far more accurate statement would be "On average 10% of the brain has increased blood flow at any one time."

Human beings rarely use their whole brain for any kind of cognitive processing, why would this be any different. Sure it sounds good to say men only use half their brain, but honestly its just a part of how the brain works. A major point to be made here is that the brains of men and women have a major difference in how they function, female brains use parts from all over the brain in several processes, while male brains tend to use larger parts from a single region. This is why men are far more likely to have auditory and vocal damage from a stroke, i.e. alot of times men lose the ability to speak from strokes, whereas this phenomenon is far less common in women.

Women have a thicker corpus callusum (sp?), so infomation gets passed between the two halves of the brain easier. This is why women are better multi-taskers, and also means that the brains "workload" is more likely to be distributed across the two halves.
All scientific testing shows women are no better at multi tasking it is a myth.

Did some googeing...women don't appear to be conclusivly better than men at multitasking.. there seems to be some debate in psychology at the moment over what "multi-tasking" actually is, so nobody seems perticuarly sure. At any rate, i'm fairly sure that women have a bigger corpus callisum.

Hold on a second...so I was labelled sexist for mentioning the fact that men typically have larger and heavier brains on average (which is true) in Psychology but openly saying that men only use half of their brains for speech is perfectly fair?
When labeled sexist/racist for presenting facts (not fake facts that are really propoganda), my general response is, "then prove me wrong." and watch them shut up.
So next time it happens, challenge them. If you know your facts are correct, tell them to disprove them.

I just wonder if we listen with the half of the 10% of our brain capacity that all humans function at, or a physical half of the brain.

Oh well. Can't always waste time listening to somebody natter on, one must keep watch for predators and scavengers at all times.

Oh, and also, a pool of 40 people out of a possible 6.5-odd BILLION isn't exactly what I'd call a definitive revelation.
Humans use and have access to 100% of there brains.

WE do listen we just don't put as much effort into it is all I got from that.

Yes, men have other things to worry about like hunting, killing, and being manly. Whereas women need to do their daily activities while listening for the baby. Men can turn off hearing random things while focusing.

I'm just going to pop in here without reading many of the posts here and say that men and women are different in our biology and our psychology. It doesn't matter how much of it is nurture as opposed to nature, not for practical purposes. Exactly what these differences mean, is absolutely unknowable, not only because there are so many differences, but because humans are also individually different from each other, and you can also divide us by other factors such as genetics and class.

Showing that women have a thicker corpus callosum is like showing that we have mammary glands, or wider pelvic girdles. It's a physical fact that doesn't make any difference in how we act toward each other.

So it only takes us half the brain power of females to listen? Go super man brain power.

Obviously it's open to interpretation by pseudo scientists such as myself.

So Women use the creativity side of the brain when listening?

Well that explains why their reactions apparently bare no relation to what is actually said...
I always wondered why that was the case. No sexism intended, but from my experience, it's true.

My mother is a psychologist I brought the topic up never again I say. I have no idea about brain formation.

Isn't it obvious that we guys are so good at everything that we only need to use half our brains for listening? WE ARE THE SUPERIOR SEX!!![footnote]Wee, a footnote pointing out that that was blatant sarcasm![/footnote]

Anyhoo, I'm sure I'll be using that as an excuse or something at some point in the near future. One girl in my class is mighty agressive (in a good, hilarious way), so I'm prone to find myself in a fitting position to drop this little nugget in no time.
