So I need to go get some kitty products from the store. I thought about picking up Demon Souls while I was out. :) But I really don't have oodles of time to search for the details surrounding the TYPE of game it is. All I know is that it's an RPG, and that it's awesome (looks amazing too).

So those of you that have experienced it, is it worth while? What kind of game does it play like? Oblivion/Fallout3? I'll come back and read this before I leave. :)

I'll just say: It's awesome.

I picked it up from Asia and loved every minute of it. It's not very much like Oblivion, not as casual as a game of this kind. If you just kind of want a normal Oblivion-esque experience I wouldn't really recommend it.

I'll describe it as this: Fighting system is like Zelda on crack with defense as the main difficulty. Every oppenent (especially on harder difficulty) can kill you. You can't relax a minute. It's very strategic but oh so rewarding once you beat a boss. The weapon variety, balance and strategic differences are unlike any game i've played so far. it's not the kind of RPG were you kill 50 rats in the first level if you know what I mean, it has a very 1-on-1 mentality to it which translates awesomely in PvP.

If you happen to pick it up don't dwell on early loses and deaths, you'll get used to it and the game really only starts once you can level (after the first boss). It doesn't do a good job of explaining the basics of the game but you'll get used to it once you practice. It kind of reminded me a little of Diablo 2 for the difficulty on Hell settings. Very unforgiving.

Online play is absolutely phenomenal. If you have online: You have never experienced anything like it. You recruit people and work together. You have to work together, there is no alternative. I mostly played with Japanese gamers as my partners and they were great guys, very helpful trying to explain the game to me with however they could express it (received some hilarious PSN messages, cool guys really).

It's very much an old-school, skill based game. If you have time on your hands and are willing to take a bit of time adjusting at first you will love this. I loved it, then again I love most RPGs.

Hope this helped a bit.

This beautifully-worded description made me momentarily forget about the ass-rapingly hard difficulty. Like Zelda you say? Sounds interesting. The videos I saw made the combat look really akward.

Well I mostly likened it to Zelda because you spend a lot of time circle-strafing around targeted enemies while waiting to block and counter their attacks. Leaping attacks, shield blocks and counters and stabbing finishers are all part of the package. The combat isn't awkward (though it can be slow-paced and rewards the patient players), infact I was rather surprised how well the control was optimized for a game pad. I have no clue how this game plays out if you are a heavy magic user or ranged warrior, the differences in gameplay by using different melee-weapons are already pretty heavy.

To balance my overly positive impressions I'll also say this: The visual design and art direction aren't too great in my opinion. The game looks a bit dull. It achieves the dark and gritty fantasy vibe but remains a bit low on variety and imagination. The story is also rather flat. I liked the general dark tone (which very much fit the overall difficulty)but it definetly isn't a game with lots of NPCs and towns to explore (what little dialogue there is is pretty well done though).

I'd still highly recommend it. If you are unsure if it'll be too hard for you give it a rent and be sure not to cast it away too soon because it picks up momentum after the first boss.

*Sniparoo*
Dark themes? Horribly hard enemies? Slow combat? Methinks this sounds like a survival/horror game disguised as an RPG which is a plus!

Yeah, you could almost call it that.
Pretty sure if I was 10 years younger I would have shit my pants during the first 10 minutes.

Wiki says it's a "spiritual successor" to the Kings Field series that came out on the PS1 and PS2 consoles. :) That was enough of a sell to me, cause I grew up with those games. Like old school Elder Scrolls games.

It's a ps3 game, and thus far no one has said a single bad thing about it. :) The more I read about it this evening, the more I want it.

It seems like an amazing game. I've also ordered mine from the states, as it's not released in Europe yet.

Take a look here if you have answers you want answered :
