Demon's Souls' "Amazing Success" In UK Gives Sequel Hope

The incredible sales success of hardcore RPG Demon's Souls in the U.S. has been mirrored by sales in the UK.

Let's be honest here: From Software's took its time [http://www.amazon.com/Demons-Souls-Playstation-3/dp/B002AB7TX8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1280934678&sr=8-1] making the trek to Europe after coming to the U.S. in October 2009, the game finally arrived at the end of June to the same sales success seen in the U.S.

Atlus, the game's North American publisher, projected that Demon's Souls would sell 75,000 copies in the U.S., but it ended up moving 280,000 as of Eurogamer [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99980-Demons-Souls-Sales-Triple-Expectations] that the title's limited edition release called the Black Phantom Edition has also been an "amazing success" there.

Lee Kirton, marketing and PR manager for Namco Bandai Partners UK said: "I can't give you a number, but what I mean by an 'amazing success' is that all the stock we built of the Black Phantom Edition has sold out (apart from dribs and drabs). For a game that's been out a long time overseas we believe it to be a success."

Kirton admits: "We haven't done hundreds of thousands of units, but we've been pleased." The Black Phantom Edition was similar to North America's Deluxe Edition [http://www.amazon.com/Demons-Deluxe-Artbook-Soundtrack-Playstation-3/dp/B002GJRQQY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1280934678&sr=8-2] which included a strategy guide and soundtrack CD. An approximately $16 cheaper standard edition of Demon's Souls will be released in the UK on August 6 which will probably pump sales up even more.

With Demon's Souls now a proven success in three major regions, I'm thinking we'll get that sequel hinted at [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98264-Rumor-Demons-Souls-Sequel-Hinted-At] in the past. Gamers are demanding more punishment.

Hopefully seeing this we might get more RPGs in the U.K before America.

Then again, Europe has been screwed out of alot of releases, im not holding much hope.

Also Namco Bandai, when will we get Tales of Vesperia for the PS3?

Been waiting a long time to get the finished version of that game...

Mixed feelings

Its a blessing because we get a sequel for a good game

A curse because ill have to play a game that hates the very essence of my being a second time.

Extreme Success? I haven't met anyone who's bought that game over here, and all the game stores I've seen tended to put it straight in with the discount stuff.
Not saying it's bad, but I'm surprised it was classes as successful.

I'm just thankful to see that there is in fact a huge demand for a game like that. I always find it interesting how some things that make certain games great completely contradict good design philosophy...

I hope so. I loved playing the game. It's one of the few console games i bought instead of renting.

I live in the UK but I imported my copy from China well over a year ago, seeing as how It was all in English anyways there did not seem to be much point waiting for release that at the time seemed pretty unlikely to happen at all.

Good if its getting a sequel though

Before America?! You've got to be joking. The way Sony handled the publishing rights to Demon's Souls (read: virtually not at all), I'll just be glad that we even see it over here, let alone within the same general release date as the rest of the civilised world.

OT: I've only just got the first game, and progress at the moment is snail-pace. But that's ok; I should be done by the time the sequal arrives on Australian shores, 2 years after everybody else.

They've got to release a PC version; that's where all the RPG elitist gamers are.
Demon's Souls gameplay is much more suited for action gamers, not the RPG gamers who are used to "swap hits, attack with weapon or magic until dead, heal when necessary".

OT: Oh how I would love a sequel... AMAZING game. People grossly exaggerate its difficulty though.

I would comment if I could get my hands on a copy of the thing. Can't find it anywhere in the shops.

For such a success, what was all this I heard about the iffy state of keeping the US servers online?

http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2010/07/demons-souls-servers/

At least through March 2011. That's just a little over a year and change since the US release and much less than that for the UK release that was an "Amazing Success".

I know "at least" means it could go longer, but unfortunately I have to add this info when I'm trying to get my friends (and sometimes strangers) to try it out, and it kind of puts them off of it.

"Oh yeah, the online aspect is new and awesome... but... it might go away in 6 months."

Not a great selling point.

And censored! The game picks up a bit faster. It's not a fast game due to the length for some of the levels. However, there are only 17 levels in total I believe. 5 of with are rather short. That said, it will take time leveling, upgrading, and a bit of exploring. Still a fantastic game. Just beat it last night, playing it again.
