I've always liked games like Monster Hunter Unite and to a lesser extent, Vindictus, so I was thinking about picking up Demon's Souls before the sequel, Dark Souls, came out. But...I was wondering what the multiplayer life is like? Is it still active, or did it die out already?

I haven't played in a while so i'm not too sure, but you should still give the game a chanc, the multi-player only enhances the single player anyways so...

I gotta say even if it is dead the multi-player works in a way that if it was gone you really wouldn't miss it besides seeing the occasional ghost passing by or messages left on the ground.

Although the old monk boss fight would be much less interesting without multiplayer in my opinion.

This game is NOTHING like Monster Hunter Unite - it's a LOT harder and more 'rougetype'.

Since the multiplayer consists of around 50 messages per level and the maximum people in a group is 3, it isn't hard to find people to play with, even this late.
Definitely pick it up!

Demon's Souls multiplayer is different than other multiplayer. You rarely interact with other players. They can leave clues all over the place, but none are really helpful. Every so often, you see echoes of other players running around. If you come to a blood spot, touch it and see how other people died. If you go to certain spots in the game, you can hear echoes from other games leech inside. There is a balista in one level that constantly shoots arrows until you can disable it. If you are online and have not disabled it, you can hear echoes from other games going on at the same time, which amplifies the sound into eerie. If you go there when the balista is disabled, you can still hear echoes from the other games.

There is an article on this site called "Ghost in the Machine" describing some of the events from the game.

There isn't exactly multiplayer like you imagine OP. I recommend looking up the game a bit more online.

What this guy said. Multiplayer and singleplayer isn't divided into separate playmodes like in so many other games, rather multiplayer is an integral part of the game. As far as I know there are still people playing it. If none can be found, I'd suggest asking people on this site. We have a user group set up in anticipation of Dark Souls, with a bunch of knowledgeable people, some of which I'm sure would mind giving Demon's Souls another playthrough, hell I did my 8th or so playthrough a month ago or so.

User group is here if you're interested.
