?That damn, King Allant! He screwed us over! In his quest for our kingdoms glory, he sent us into a blight in which we cannot escape!?
- Unknown Boletarian official.
In an unspecific time before the events of Demon?s Souls, a young knight scavenges the kingdom to survive, all during the time wishing for a way out, and a way to end it all.

This is a sort of prequel or side-story that takes place before the events of the game. In case you never played the game or wish to know a bit more of the lore go to here:http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/world-history

Walking through a desolate town on the outskirts of the kingdom, all around dead bodies, souls sucked out and absent of any sound. The young knight continued to walk, eyes going to his left and right looking for any movement. Everyone was dead, but that didn?t mean he was alone. A crackle in the distance, the knight stopped, something was around. Again another crackle, it was closer now and was ahead of him. The sounds echoed; no other sound to conceal the noise. What could it be thought the knight; it grew closer and soon came into sight. A simple foot soldier walked from behind a building into the street with the Knight.
The foot soldier, soulless, began to come at the Knight with his sword and shield ready. When the soldier got to him, he brought up his sword and then brought it down, to counter the Knight brought up his shield, blocking it. Keeping his shield up and bringing his sword from the right sliced the soldier?s stomach causing them to fall over. To make sure he was dead, the Knight went over to the soldier and stabbed him again this time in the neck. This was one of many times he felt no remorse for killing a fellow human.
Before all of this, before the fog, he wouldn?t ever kill unless it was to protect, he wasn?t fighting an enemy from another nation, a monster; no he was killing a fellow Boletarian soldier. Damn King Allant, Damn him to hell just as he has to his kingdom he murmured to himself. He wish he could just wake-up and find this to all just be a bad dream, a nightmare, to wake up in the barracks training happily with his fellow knights but the sad truth is that this is reality. His sense came back to reality, he had zoned out. There was nothing in this town, so he began to walk again, soon coming to the edge of the town and entering the forest.
The tree?s all around dying, the sky grey and dull, and a despaired Knight walking through.

Hours passed, the sky began to darken, and heavy rain fell upon the land. He had been in the forest during this time and was voided of any other sign of life besides himself. As he walked, his head was face down like a child who just got grounded or punished. His mind in a deep fog of thought, racing over thoughts and memories, his old life had ended, and his new life had begun without his consent. Then his deep thought was broken as he noticed an old fortress ahead.
The gate was destroyed, and its pieces, gone. Though it seemed the fortress had gotten into conflict, days before the old one awakened. As he got closer he began to crouch and go slower, even if it seemed empty, odds are it isn?t. When he got to the entrance he peaked inside, lots of the cobble stone and wooden stairs had been destroyed. Bodies lay scattered around, swords, spears, and other sort of weapons, stabbed into them, the blood of the soldiers were dry and the place had the terrible stench of death all around.
Bandit?s bodies also were around, but many less, though it seemed it wasn?t the bandits that killed all the soldiers. Whatever did kill them was most likely still around; he walked slowly into the fortress, the rain still pouring down hard with little cover. Suddenly a noise broke into the rain, a girl?s scream echoed around, he was right, something was in here. Most likely the girl was being attacked; he began to run in the direction of the scream. He entered inside the fortress and began to run down a long corridor and then he came to an abrupt halt.
A girl in a black robe was walking backwards, and a soldier in a red aura was coming at her slowly. She was pushed back to the wall and the soldier brought up his large two-handed sword. The Knight rushed at the soldier and stabbed him in the back and then pulled out his sword. Though the soldier was stabbed it felt no pain, it stopped, turned and faced its new prey, and the knight took a ready stance. The red aura lit up the dark room, making the soldier stand out. Taking him by surprise, the soldier rushed at him much faster than a normal human and began to quickly slash at him; luckily he was able to bring up his shield in time to block the blows. What the hell is he thought the knight.
The Knight looking up saw the soldier bring up his sword slowly as if he was charging up his attack, so the knight jumped back and let the slash hit the ground and got stuck. He took his chance to rush at the soldier and began to slash him. even he slashed the head. No blood came out, almost as if he was a ghost. After enough blows, the soldier finally got his sword out of the ground and began to block the knight?s attacks. Normally his opponent would be dead, but this opponent was abnormal one. For a second both of them stopped, moved back, and got in ready stances. They began to go around in a circle, both looking for a chance to strike a finish blow on the other. The rain outside stopped and the knight took this as a signal to strike so he rushed at his opponent and the soldier brought his sword to his left, trying to hit the knight?s side. He ducked and then came from a below, an uppercut slice of the red soldier, the soldiers sword then dropped, the noise echoed.
The soldier walked back slowly as in disbelief and then instead of falling over, just faded into a green light dust into the air and then into nothingness. Sweat ran down the knights face, inside his helmet his head was hot. He had won the encounter with a new foe, most likely he wouldn?t be the last of his kind, that red aura would haunt his dreams. Then the Knight remembered the girl, he turned his head to her and saw that she was now standing, and then she bowed. With the knight gone he could see her more clearly, she had blue eyes, dark red hair, and pale skin. She was also young, mid-twenties.
?Thank you sir Knight for saving me, may I inquire as to who you are??
As he began to speak he took off his helmet ?My name is Ryn Grosuhl.?

As he began to speak he took off his helmet ?My name is Ryn Grosuhl.?
?My name is Malenia Ilsotf. Once more I thank you Ryn.?
?It?s no problem Malenia, but did you know what that was??
Malenia pondered for a moment, scratched her head, but came up with nothing. The rain had stopped and it was time for Ryn to leave the fortress, so he turned and began to walk the way he came, but first he stopped and looked back at the girl.
?Well I guess I shall be going now, hope you don?t get attacked like that again? Though as he began to walk again he felt a tug on his arm and looked at what was tugging him, it was Malenia.
?I wish to come with you; I can?t defend myself out here? I have no training in combat, and if it was a challenge to take out that thing, I will have no chance to survive this time of darkness.?
Ryn sighed, he had no choice, and to keep his sanity up, it was better to have company then none ?Alright you can come, just follow me and don?t stray.?
She nodded her head and as he moved, she moved. Once they got outside they were greeted to the normal dull grey sky, slowly he looked around, and making sure they were the only ones. Once he finished checking, he signaled her to follow and they left the fortress through the back gate. They began to follow a path that was almost overgrown but it wasn?t enough that the path was gone. Ryn?s armor finally began to dry off, from the rain earlier.
Malenia then asked as they were walking ?So where are we heading??
?To the small village of Trula, my mother, father, and rest of my family live there, it?s basically a giant farm. I sent them a letter before all the fog saying I would visit. I hope they are still alive.?
After that they continued in silence, it was nice to have another person with him but he didn?t know what to talk about; talking about what we were doing before the fog would make them only more depressed. Soon they reached the edge of the forest and now were on a road that edged a large farm. Though it wasn?t Ryn?s family?s farm, another farmer that lived near them.
On the farms land, cows and horses lay dead, rotting as crows picked their guts. Though oddly, seeing the cows made Ryn hungry, he hadn't eaten in days. Continuing down the path, they soon found the small farm house, with the bodies of the farmers on the ground out in front of it. He almost found it disturbing how he is used the dead bodies and blood, while he is a knight, it was one thing he always hated to see, death and blood.
Inside the small house, it was still, dark with only a light coming from a small lit lantern which the fire was only barely alive. The windows were cracked but everything else was in fine condition. Suddenly outside it began to rain again, Malenia found food in a cabinet, simple fruits, but enough to fill the stomachs dire hunger. An hour passed and the sky began to darken, night was settling in, they did not dare step foot outside during the night, too frighten of what might lurk about.
There was only one bed, so Ryn gave it to Malenia and he slept on the cold wooden ground, with his armor still on. That night he had a nightmare, it was of the first day of the fog, when he had just awoken from what was a normal night, to a living hell, his friends began to attack him and the only way he was able to stop them was by killing them. Friends he had known for over ten years, killed by his own blade, damn King Allant.
It was all his fault! None of this would have happened, this country would still be thriving, but now it is a desolate wasteland of death and despair, and none know if it ever may return to normal. Hours went by, the night passed, and the sun rose to the same grey sky, the rain had stopped during the night as they slept. After eating, they found a bag lying around and filled it with the rest of the food, Malenia carried it as they walked. Ryn would have but his armor, sword, and shield already gave him too much weight, though necessary to survive.
Soon, down the path they would reach their destination...
