The Evangelion movies depressed me for quite some time.

I also thought the second Samurai X OVA (the sequel one - can't remember the full name right now) was really depressing, the ending was really bittersweet.

ALL slice of life anime. Seriously. It sucks huge nads when they end. They always end so abruptly you're left with a sense of emptiness. You think to yourself "but they all live happily ever after at the end right?". It almost makes you sick. You start to think about how someday the people around you won't be there anymore and you'll be left to wonder what ever happened to all your friends in life and how they are doing and how in the end we will leave this world and our friends and family will be like the characters in the anime. You have left the picture but their lives continue, and you won't know anything about it.

Anyways. I don't really think ひぐらしのなく頃に (higurashi) is that sad. It's just mind blowing. Especially if you read the actual manga and watch all 56? (or was it 52) episodes.

Oh you have no idea.

You want depressing? Grave of the Fireflies will provide in spades.
'Cause I'd get a thousand hugs
From ten thousand lightning bugs
As they tried to teach me how to dance

Also as far as sad animes go, the ending to Azumanga Daioh made me cry. Nothing bad happened other then the fact that they all have to say goodbye...

Grave of the Fireflies... ah yeah... T~T

And Clannad. Clannad's got some real tearjerker moments... That -whole- series... After Story really hurt.

5 Centimeters per Second. It's an hour-long movie, and is one of the most depressing ones out there, almost enough to challenge Grave of the Fireflies. Bring several boxes of tissues. Unless, y'know, you're not the type to cry because of movies.

When I watched this the first time I was just in pieces. It really hit me. I wasn't quite as prepared for it as I should have been!
Ya, I had a similar reaction.

I didn't even intend to watch the damn thing. I just stumbled upon it while flicking through channels.

"Oh hey, one of those Japanese cartoon things. Neat. Maybe it will have giant robots."

"Nope, no robots. What a boring load of cra... wait... hang on..."

*sniff*

"Holy crap! What right does this thing have to make a nineteen year old male blubber like a schoolgirl!?"

Texhnolyze (hard to get your head around it but the end is very depressing)

Haibane Renmei

Mahoromatica (the manga is very very heavy on the ecchi but the anime is a lot better)

Saikano

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien a.k.a Rumbling Hearts (Its kind of a soap opera in anime form but I personally liked it very much)

5 centimeters per second (its a feature filmed but it was bitter sweet)

Rurouni Kenshin - Trust and Betrayal OVA (this is awesome even if you aren't familiar with Rouni Kenshin in general)

Rurouni Kenshin - Reflection OVA another good one for Kenshin

Grave of The Fireflies

And my favorite depressing manga has got to be Ai-ren fully recommend it!

I'm a bit annoyed with the people saying Clannad and Clannad After Story, because it's not depressing. Its sad in some parts, but the entire point of the anime is that despite the sad parts (the very, very sad parts) as a whole it's generally a happy experience.

OT: I'll say Bokurano, a show about a group of 14 year old kids who are forced to participate in a "game" where they pilot a giant robot against mysterious alien robots that are invading Earth. May sound all fine and good but it is very, very depressing.

If you want a sad all around anime though, the atmosphere of Ergo Proxy is pretty damn depressing, and radiohead is used as a ending theme, so thats like +1000 awesome points right there.

Your reaction sounds just like mine! I added all the Studio Ghibli films to my Lovefilm account and when I opened it that morning I was like, "oh great something light and cheery with a good moral message, I think I'll watch this asap!"

*two hours later*

*blubbing uncontrollably*
Next time I am prepared for the blubfest.

I'm surprised 'Voices of a Distant Star' hasn't popped up yet.
That was depressing...

You should try watching the "Witch Blade" anime series.
It's pretty fun but the ending does become very depressing.
