The Source Code Project is an open source engine for Descent: Freespace 2. It adds support for high resolutions and extra graphical effects such as Bump Mapping, Specular Maps and all that jazz. There are several mods being made for this engine, one is a Star Wars based mod, the others include Babylon 5, Wing Commander, and Battlestar Galactica. Anyone here ever play FS2?

If so I'd be up for some good ol' Hamachi or by going here: http://www.game-warden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=267

Freespace 2 doesn't actually have "Descent" in its title. That was just something they added in the first one to avoid trademark issues with some old disk utility. Neither of the games is actually part of the Descent "universe." ;)

Cool ... installed and played through the first missions of the original a couple of weeks ago and thought to myself that it looked rather too dated; had forgotten all about the source release. My Saitek X52 Flight Controller will turn out to be useful yet again!

Hey, awesome. I've always wanted to play through Freespace 2, but I've never been able to get my hands on it.
You still need all the Freespace 2 data files, but the updated engine is pretty nice on the eyes. :)

Gog.com has Freespace 2 download for $5.99. That's a huge improvement over the current ~$80 price tag of the actual boxed game.

Sweet! I didn't know that. I have the original manual and CDs, but it's good to know that it's out there for a decent price.
