First, having read all the codex entries in both mass effects, AND collected all the audio tapes in bioshock, I have to say that I like the codex system better. It sorts the more important topics in a different section, and it probably takes just as long to listen to the important entries as it does to listen to bioshock's audio tapes. The codex just has that extra section of unlimited filler data for the huge nerds.
Second, you can show me a million posts of people saying they hated it, but I'd say Mass Effect 1's sales over time, and Mass Effect 2's launch sales say something about the first one that can't be ignored.

Sales figures aren't really a justifiable mark of quality.
