This is just a random thought I've had. In the comments section, outline the basic design and effect of a dormant trap you would like to make. Can be any setting, Ancient castle, jungle temple a la Indiana Jones, abandoned starship, military facility, whatever. The only rules are;

1.) Keep it realistic. No laser traps in a stone ruin, for example.
2.) Keep it sensible. Don't put anything like triggering a nuclear warhead, keep it with the confines of leaving the structure it's defending still standing.
3.) It has to be triggered by the intruder themselves, no scouts or monitor watching.

Get creative and sadistic people!

Intruders step over a trip wire.

Trip wire dumps a bunch of cat nip on the intruders.

Trip wire also releases hungered cats.

A door that shuts it self and can be opened by one side only.

Simple but the best

Sometimes I make dungeons on my minecraft server to give people something to do. I have a square on the ground, usually something like 5 blocks by 5 blocks, and they are all covered in pressure plates. Only a certain path through them is safe. The others, if activated will trigger dispensers in the walls to shoot arrows. Or dig a deep hole, place tnt two blocks below the surface, then sand above the tnt, then a pressure plate on the sand. For added hurt cover the bottom of the tnt with arrows. If they step on it they fall into a pit and get blasted and shot with arrows :p

A giant Pit covered in thin boards that will snap upon the target stepping on them and cover it with random foliage.

For a nice rich mansion.

A door that opens to a dark dead-end hallway. Also a stone wall slides in to block the entrance to said hallway.

The actual entrence will be in the back. Behind a bush. Or maybe something akin to the bat cave. I dunno.

Get a hermaphrodite to dress like an attractive woman.
Give her instructions to seduce as many men as possible.
'She' also has to have a weird fetish where she only takes off her clothes after her partner is handcuffed.
Instant success.

That sounds awesome!!

Pungee pits. A classic.

I'd put a tripwire, slightly concealed, in front of a pressure plate. The tripwire is possible to disarm and basically harmless, although it would serve to arm the pressure plate. This would lure adventurers into a false sense of security and hopefully they would overlook the well-hidden pressure plate would cause a portion of the ceiling to collapse on them.

A tripwire that pours burning hot wax all over the unfortunate intruder. Then, the walls swing around to reveal spike plates, very quietly. That way, when the intruder is struggling with the wax, he/she might run into the spike plates. If we're trying to kill them, simply add in a cage release to let out a mountain lion.
Optional: have the spike plates slowly move in to the center of the room, trapping the intruder.

A room contains an ornate stone plinth, a shaft of light falling upon it from a hole in the ceiling. Motes of dust swirl in the sunlight, twirling around a small golden chest resting on the pedestal. When the chest is opened, the door locks and the walls begin to close in from all sides as the plinth recedes into the ground. The walls begin to crush the intruder and, just as its pressing their shoulders uncomfortably together and their breathing becomes hoarse... it stops. The intruder stops their frantic thrashing, and remains completely still. Are they safe? Will they escape? Is there a hope after this horror?

And that's when the scorpions fall from the hole in the ceiling.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deception_series PS1 games whose sole purpose was putting you in situations to use, and create combinations of some incredibly sadistic traps.

Good times :)

Here is one I made

Argh! I was fiddling with my flux capacitator while reading this thread, and my phone rang, while I was distracted the flux capacitator sent your picture back to 1950's Indonesia, oh well. I'm sure such a simple thing won't mess up the space time continuum, I mean, there's no way a silly thing like that could stop the US from their successful invasion of New Washinton (Or Vietnam, as it was then called).

For my trap, a chandelier that is suspended in your office, above the chair in front of your desk. With the press of a button it will fall on whoever is sitting talking to you, and it can be covered in sharpened blades and incredibly heavy.

Get a boy to dress up as a girl.... Oh wait you meant the OTHER kind of trap. Hehehe silly me. ;)

I dunno, I'm not very good at designing puzzles or traps. But I felt I needed to make that first sentence.

Hmmm, you've not heard of the movie "Teeth" have you? If not, look it up, and you'll never look at your first "trap" with the same eyes again.

Okay, so here's the idea:

I have a big, heavy box with one open side. The open side is facing down, and is being kept partly off the ground by a stick. The gap between the ground and the box is large enough for a man to walk under.
Now here's the important bit:
Under the box lies a clearly visible stack of cookies, and to the stick is tied a rope. I hide in the background, and when my nemesis approaches the cookies, I yank the rope, pulling the stick out from under the box, thus trapping him.

It looks like you don't know this, so...
When referring to anime, "trap" means, uh...
Let's just say that person in the drawing might not be what you think they are.

Edit: And sorry for the double post.
