kinda hard to describe what i mean by freeform, anything that gives you alot of options i guess, (like Civilization, X-Com, Elder Scrolls, Simcity, Spore, Elite.) doesn't have to be nonlinear.
i prefer something very complex, with an emphasis on giving the player as much freedom of choice and options as possible. customization and such.

i mostly focus on pc, however. i am not against anything on other platforms (will use an emulator if necessary.)

remember though, complexity is key.

Fallout (any of them) should do.

Or Deus Ex, if you want an oldy but still a goody (excellent game by the way).

I'd say LittleBigPlanet if you didn't prefer the PC. Actually, I'll say LittleBigPlanet anyways, as it gives the player an immense amount of freedom when it comes to creating levels.

Gmod? That let's you do lots of crap, right? that the kind of stuff you want?
Off Topic: Anyone make a working Mecha on Gmod yet?

Reread it, and I'm gonna go with LittleBigPlanet or Fallout3, as the ones above me mentioned

i should also mention i am not a big fan of the RTS genre, but mention them anyway. i will try to look up as much as you guys throw at me either way.

Fallout 3 is very sandbox, in the same tradition as Oblivion. Lots of mods available for it too for a varied experience.

Total War has RTS elements, but also has heavy turn based elements and is more accurately described as a hybrid. Mammoth in scope, also heavily moddable.

Either of those games can eat up months of time, depending how in-depth you go with them.

You could possibly say that i have the entire Bethesda RPG library (and to be honest i believe fallout 3 is just as good as it's older siblings, silly fan boys.)

I think i will try Rome Total War first, inless you have a specific favorite.

Rectify this now. You can get it cheaply from steam. It will show you a level of freeform unmatched in over a decade.

Mount&Blade's worth a try, download mods before playing though. The basic gameplay can be a little slow otherwise.

My friend swears by Rome. He claims it has the best AI. I've never tried it, myself. I have too strong an affection for the Medieval period.

I recently cracked out Medieval 2 for another go-round to eat up a week when I had nothing better to do, and 5 weeks later I still wasn't done my first campaign game. The series has its share of warts, but in terms of richness and depth of experience it has few equivalents.

"Warts" are the price we pay for only being human (rather then super ultra rich mutant robots game designers.) I will try and play both if i can.

Speaking of warts, your faction heir can actually get warts. Don't let witches roam the countryside unchecked!

Nothing like a monstrously ugly, effete, warty faction heir to bring a royal lineage to a crashing halt.

For a somewhat unknown title a stupid number of people seem to have played that game.

Whilst not completely going with what you're after, played any of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games? Might enjoy them if not.

You could try The Sims 3, lots of stuff to do in Simsville nowadays. Or maybe some Saint's Row 2 for great action and driving with plenty of minigames in between. You've already mentioned Spore and The Elder Scrolls... hmm, what else? If you want many brutal, fun ways to kill people, you might find Prototype to your liking. I hear Mass Effect 2 is good as well.
