Hey guys, I came across this pic and thought it would be sweet if my background was like it so I want to change it. Problem is i have no idea what it's running or if it requires linux or anything else. Anyone here know how to make it work? Thanks in advance.

Have you just tried right clicking on it and then using the option "Set as Background"?

Or you can just download it, and go into settings and customise it from there.

Looks like something out of the X3: Terran Conflict main screen.

I'm pretty sure that's not actually a working desktop... just a manipulated image to includes elements of a desktop.

Noob question, if i install linux will all my programs still work and will i be able to go back to vista if i need to at a later date?

You can partition your hard drive so that you can have both Linux and Vista on it at the same time. You would just have to choose which to boot up when you start your computer.

As far as the programs go, most, if not all your Windows programs would not work in Linux. You would have to get the Linux version of whatever programs you wanted. You can emulate some Windows programs in Linux with Wine, but it can take a lot of work to get them working right, particularly with games.

Compiz Fusion is so boss, but right now I'm mucking with it because i JUST updated to ubuntu 9.04 and having issues with it x_x

but yeah, that's Compiz with ubuntu, and it's amazing to play around with ^_^

if you're running 9.04 it already has it in the packages, but not up and running which is kind of odd. I suggest you start up synaptic manager and reinstall, that's what I did, and at least got it up and moving.

no no, i dont have ubuntu yet, im downloading it right now. I was just asking what i have to do after it installs

You could do that, just be sure to set your BIOS to allow bootable USB devices. You would have to format or at least partition that external drive if you want to use Linux with it, so save any files you want to keep off of it. The only downside to running Linux off of an external drive is that it might run a bit slowly since the USB connection imposes a bandwidth restriction, but it won't be too bad.

Ah well then, yes. when it gets done installing, you go to your applications/ accessories/ terminal and it will bring up a shell prompt.

You then type in "sudo apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager" and it will install it after you verify. no quotations of course. Or, you can go through System/ administration / synaptic package manager and run the search and download. Then it's all playing around with until you get it how you like it. it's not too difficult.
