Games that Have Destructable enviroments use them well aka Mercs 1&2,Destroy all humans 1&2 Battlefield:Heros of WW2,War of the monsters You get the idea. THese enviroments worked while destroyed.

Although an rpg Do you think Destructable enviroments would work?

WOW ELDER SCROLLS NEWS!!!! *Clicks*

You what? Where's the link saying that DE is implemented?

As for "should it be implemented"... No. If you had slight (read: any) lag , DE will easily bloat that up to way past anything playable. Nice thought though. Plus, what would happen? are we talking battering holes in walls to get inside, wrecking tables, what? To be honest, Oblivion's physics engine sucked more than a dutch whore at times. Think I'm wrong? try to put a cup on a bookshelf when it has 2+objects on it. Now imagine that with every table, chair and wallclipping.

"GAINT FIREBALL OF ULTIMATE DOOM!!!"

*civillans scream in terror*

I have two words to describe what I think of destructible environments in Elder Scrolls V:

1. Hell
2. Yes

I think it would bring the immersion level up quite a bit, and it would make the game a ton of fun (see Sargent Toughie's above scenario).

Why do you write like that?

Hmm...fantasy rpg with destructible environments? I dunno...seems a little icky...
I don't quite think if it were in an RPG it would have the same mechanics, building degrading, trees dying, trees reacting when you attack them(cuts out chunks or brings it down after a while of whacking with an axe or claymore or hammer), scorch marks on a shield or house that have to be cleaned up a bit(for the sake of tidyness). It wouldn't be so fast it would be more gradual but if you went crazy for a while the object that happens to look at you wrong(hey, if your crazy, that kind of thing happens) will be down if you try hard enough.

I'd love to instead of lock pick the front door. Knock down a wall with FIRE BALL OF JESUS spell and steal all of their lettuce that would be fun.
Stop using the name of our Lord in vein.
Aside from that it would be fun to do that, but then where would they put the loading screens(I still don't think they'll be gone).

I think I agree with the giant fireball of ultimate doom.

In a negative sense. See when you make destructable environments for this kind of game you have to relate the amount of destruction directly to the amount of a certain kind of damage. And seeing that the TES series has an option for making your own oh so badass spell that could eradicate everything between your enemy, you, and the almost everything in your sight this would take up a LOT of programming. DE is easy for games like Gears of War 2 because you have fixed weapons. TES allows you to customise, so every possible variable needs to be taken into consideration.

Also I think it would suck if you wanted to attack a large group of bandits outside your house with a massive fireball, you miss and hit your house instead.

Now That is A very good idea that i had only Dreamt of, Then again you could always impliment it for a kvach like battle (Thinks back To Oblivion with more than one Npc in a Room at a time) 'shudders' ... Maybe not eh?

well, fully destructible environments.. no.

but having more breakable objects would be nice, and better and more persistent "damage" decals on things like walls would be nice too

destructable armour and weapons... and i dont mean degredation i mean KASMASH. If my weapon is a hundred times better than the light leather shield being thrust in front of my sword i want to see that shield being smashed to matchwood. I would also like to see sword-sword combat to impliment this as well. I want to break my enemies sword into shards of metal if its a lot weaker than mine. This could be repared and all for the sake of looting. Not to mention destructable bodies with flying limbs ect... The skeletons managed it in oblivion.i think people will accidently smash down an important house. I dont want destroyable houses but i wouldnt mind objects and such (mostly melons for the sake of fun). Scaring would be possible without perminant damage, leaving deep scratches on the wood/brick of your house. Scorch and freeze marks as well for the magey types.

In short fully destructable everything = no
Destructable objects = yes

Well It could be used as a mod, use warhammer on melon then smashy smashy. Or throw cups across the room and bust them if you get mad.

yes as long as it included the whole of tamriel. according to how big cyrodil is in a oblivion. because seeing the other countries in oblivion and being able to go to them really pissed me off. i don't care how long the loading times will be or how long it will take to make i want it.

As with most game design ideas, there's really only one way to find out. If you'd asked me in 2000 what I thought about being able to only carry 2 weapons and have regenerating health, I'd have asked what Disney game we were talking about.

So yeah, might as well try. There's no point in them just remaking the same game but with new art & plot. They gotta add new features or otherwise it's just a glorified expansion pack.

Finally...my Warhammer of Uber Badassery + 9000000000 won't be foiled by a flimsy wooden chest.

Smashing things is fun! Of course there should be a limit but some objects should be destructible.

Excuse me for pointing out that the idea of destructable environments is not a new concept, so why is there mass excitement?

I first saw DE used in Red Faction and it kicked gratuitous amounts of arse there since I had a rocket launcher and about 20 demo charges. Blowing holes in the wall large enough to put a BMW through was fun, even if it was somewhat pointless.

In Eldar scrolls I can't imagine the protaganist carrying anything larger than a hammer at any given time, hardly the most destructive impliment known to man. And no matter how large it is, a fireball (of doom or otherwise) is never going to match up to a fusion missile launcher.

In other words, destructable environments should probably be used only in games where your character can get access to well and truley apocolyptic weapons such as firearms (most notably shooters) where you can actually see the damage you're causing.

Blowing up buildings and spelling your name in demolition charges = groovy
Causing small nicks and chips in the wall with a sword or mace = crappy

I would love to be able to smash down a door with a giant warhammer, or smash open a chest with a giant warhammer, or smash through a crumbly stone wall with a giant warhammer.

I like smashing things with giant warhammers.

In all seriousness though, I think making wooden objects destructible is probably the best idea. That way, a lot of things can break, but you can't go knocking castles over. Either that or make the damage done to stone so minuscule that it would literally take hours of pounding to knock a small hole in a stone wall.
