Deus Ex 2 hate

Why is there a lot of hate towards Deus Ex: Invisible War? I know that many sequels don't stand up to the original, but there seems to be a lot of disgust over this game in particular. I've never played any of the Deus Ex games. Even if it doesn't hold true to the first one in the series, is it still worth a buy?

Seemed very fun when I played it a while ago and I had no issue, probably the PC elite being unable to sneak past one mob without hurting someone.

I thought it was an alright game. Still had a good deal of choice, solid gameplay, and a decent plot, though the inventory system pissed me off and it seemed to be missing some the dystopian cyberpunk feel that Deus Ex 1 had.

I think people are just upset because it was an unworthy sequel, but for a sequel, it was definitely a better effort than, say, Dragon Age 2. Worth a buy, but not necessary for your get-ready-for-Human Revolution preparation :p

It was an incredibly dumbed down sequel. I normally hesitate to use the term dumbed down to describe a game or sequel since many people use it as a blanket complaint against games which streamline things (usually to their benefit as I despise obtuse UI's and archaic gameplay systems that haven't faired well with age), but dumbed down is really an appropriate way of putting it in this case. The inventory system alone is worthy of all the hate it gets.

And to clarify things, I had played through some of the original around the time it came out, but I never owned it or invested a lot of time in it until 2-3 years ago, so I'm not blinded by nostalgia. I also bought the second game a few months back during a Steam sale for $2.50. I figured for that price it couldn't possibly be as bad as people claimed. I have to say, I was legitimately surprised. I made it about two hours in before I quit playing. I just could not stand it.

Eh. I don't hate it.

However, I didn't like it either. I tried to play it twice, got bored both times and abandoned it. Compare that to three highly enjoyable playthroughs of the original Deus Ex.

I'm not sure exactly what the sequel was missing. I wasn't too miffed about the missing skill system, the 'universal ammo' or the revised inventory. However, I wasn't too happy about the removal of stealth takedowns (one-hit knockout/kill on unaware enemies from behind) and the shrunken environments.

I never got a chance to play the first one, so having only played the second, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Later I installed in on PC but could NOT get it to run right, either it would run at the wrong speed or my saving system wouldn't work, so I couldn't play it. So, judging DX2 on it's merits alone as a game, I really liked it. The dislike most certainly has to be comparison for people who got enjoyed the original, it was probably more intricate. Oh, but I do have a gripe. DX2's framerate was RUBBISH, often dropping below 15fps if there were two enemies on screen. Good thing the game wasn't THAT combat heavy.

It happens every time an old game gets a remake by a big company. If it was a project by a group of 10 modders, it would receive so much praise from everywhere, it wouldn't be funny, even if the textures were blurry and the models were bad because, of course, as we all know, all big videogame companies are the Antichrist. Same thing happened with Fallout 3.

I haven't played either game so I can't say if it good, bad, an improvement, etc., but all that matters is whether YOU enjoy it. Fuck what everybody else says, it all comes down to YOU and YOUR opinion of it.

It's alright as a game, but way the it screws with the original plot built up by the first Deus Ex just jarred me a little.

All of the characters have different attitudes, the different factions are skewed, and the mechanics are so simplified that they seem to insult the intelligence.

Deus Ex was great, and the levels were massive. It was full of choice and strategy, and it still holds up.

Invisible War was constricting, with limited strategy, much smaller areas, limited choices, and poor flow.

The problem is while certainly a decent game in it's own right, people compared it to the original Deus Ex and were not impressed.

Not impressed at all.

What is this invisible war thingie you speak of. Everybody knows that there was only one Deus Ex and that there might be another one coming out soon. (Square Enix better not F it up)

I love the first one but after hearing a lot of bile concerning the second one I never picked it up. Still if it's cheap I wouldn't be opposed to giving it a shot.

I'm a huge Deus Ex fan, I keep on about it, if there was a thing as a completely biased unflexible gamer then I'm it when it comes to Deus Ex games.

Deus Ex 2 is a disaster. It was one of the first games dumbed down to accomodate console gamers. Here are, for me, the bad points and good points of Deus Ex 2:

Bad points:

1) Horrible AI. Ennemies tend to shoot eachother if they catch eachother in a crossfire
2) UI for consoles: The interface looks like it's been created for 10 year old magpies who like big shiny objects
3) Pistol size = Rocket launcher size when it comes to inventory space
4) No more RPG elements. You can't spend points in various skill areas like in the 1st game.
5) Terrible voice acting
6) Unflexible gaming. The whole idea of the 1st Deus Ex was to be able to go through any situation with what ever skill set you have. In Invisible War, the only way that works is shooting everything that comes at you. Sneaking works badly, you can only hack computers if you have the biomod for it, which brings me to...
7) VERY limited number of biomods and inventory space.

8) Your main character, Alex D. Like SERIOUSLY? With a name like that you alreadyknow 1 plot twist (wont spoil anything)

AND, most importantly

9) NO REGARD FOR HOW YOU ENDED DEUS EX 1. They just blended all 3 possible endings into 1 just to completely F*** up the canon.

Good point:
Graphics: Nice for its age

So there it is, my completely biased opinion of what a piss poor game Deus Ex 2 is and that you should only stick to Deus Ex 1, the gaming masterpiece that I still play even today. I'll have to see what Human Revolution will have to say about it.

- It still had the game's emphasis on choice. The story is just as non-linear as the original, you can adopt a multitude of different play-styles, there are a bunch of different sidequests... even today, it still shames most other RPGs in terms of choice.
Sure you had choice, but too few choices compared to the first IMO
