"Deus Ex: GOTY" or "Fallout Collection (1 + 2 + Tactics)"?

Getting one off of Steam.

I enjoyed Fallout 3, but didn't like the way it punished me for not choosing to put points into Small Guns and Lockpicking. That's fake freedom in character building. "You CAN do this, but you're an idiot for doing so!" But its turn based, right? And I love me some turn based combat.

And I know little about Deus Ex, other than its in First Person and its apparently facemelting in its awesomeness level. And that whenever you mention it, someone goes to play it again.

ALSO:
inb4 pimppeter2 says "Digital Distribution is the enemy!"

Edit: Where did the poll go?

Invisible War is out, do to claims of shitty quality.

I found Deus Ex to be terribly overrated. Fallout on the other hand is a classic, though you will still be severely punished for investing in the wrong skills, unless you like to play creatively, which the game does let you do, if you have a high thresh hold for pain.

I have never played either but fallout sounds appealing I'd like to know more about the fallout universe, but how can you beat face melting?

Well the original deus ex is far better in my opinion than fallout 1 and 2. Also it is probablly more similar to fallout 3 than the others. Fallout 1 has plenty of false freedom in that you have a time limit for the first half of the quest.

Well, people said Left 4 Dead was face melting awesomeness. And I didn't enjoy it too much.

Same for Half Life 1. God, I want my money back for Half Life 1...

Deus Ex is a fantastic game, but it will suffer more from age due to its genre. And, as good as Deus Ex is (and it's very, very good), Fallout is just better.

Also, Invisible War is just junk.

So go with Fallout.

Do you like first-person shooting? If highly definitely yes, then Deus Ex.
Otherwise, go for Fallouts - more replayability (not the Deus Ex is lacking, but Fallouts just have more), and GURPS.

The original Fallouts are rather dull and clunky.

Deus Ex was damn good in its day and although it's a bit dated now, it's still pretty damn good (or it was last time I played it a couple of years ago).

Alright new rule face melting awesomeness needs to be used sparingly and appropriately that goes for everybody. Its just so confusing when i don't know which verb/adjective i should use to describe something.

Fallout 1 & 2 are great games, worth the money for sure.

Tactics isn't so great, and there's no autosave in any of the games, so save often!

i loved deus ex, first real FPS rpg game i played, got me into light RPG's like that.
actually fallout 3 seems to borrow a lot from it, in terms of feel (both a bit awkward when shooting, really need to level up skills)

The value of the collection might as well go up without Tactics. I remember getting the collection because I wanted to play old Fallout again. I first installed Tactics. Two hours later I didn't feel like playing any Fallout anymore.

Would someone care to describe how Deus Ex plays? No one ever gets into details beyond FPS/RPG...

Other than being an FPS/RPG? It is mainly FPS focused and is fairly light on the storytelling but still has a branching storyline based on dialogue choices you make and multiple endings. Shooting accuracy is skill based, plus there is an upgrade system that gives you various nanotech powers (speed, invisibility, accuracy etc) you can use that cost energy. Gameplaywise it has openish maps that allow for multiple approaches to reaching the objective with a variety of stealth and run and gun options.

I played Deus Ex a while back and found it to be excellent. It's quite heavy on RPG elements meaning that your accuracy is affected depending on how good you are with a gun. You can play a level in roughly 3 or 4 different ways in order to complete your objective and the mission usually turns out different at the end depending on your choice. It kicks ass. You get bionic amps which upgrade what JC Denton can do. He's kind of like an android in that respect with the whole nanotechnology upgrades. You can jump higher with some, go invisible with others and one allows you to pick up objects no human of normal strength could do. Obviously the way you upgrade you character affects gameplay and how the story progresses. It has an incredible storyline soaked in conspiracy that dynamically changes according to your choices.

Just be prepared for average graphics and a dated soundtrack. The voice acting is quite good and suits the game as a whole. Also the AI is a bit lackluster. It can be overlooked, however.

I've never played Fallout 1 and 2 but I can definitely recommend Deus Ex to you.

as a fair warning, Deus Ex has trouble playing on some more modern systems. usually the game will run too fast, talking will be cut off abruptly and text will disappear before you can read it all. this is because often your computer will simply be too powerful for the game.

So, non-linear level design, but also not an open world game, either?

Sounds good to me. I was getting sick of going around a massive game world with more side-quests than story quests. I'm in the middle of a marathon run of WRPGs, including Fallout 3 (finished), Morrowind (in progress), Mass Effect (finished yesterday), Mass Effect 2 (Just started my play as an Adept), and now I just wanna finish Morrowind and ME2 and whatever I get off of Steam, and then settle down with a nice, linear JRPG.

Get Deus Ex. The game is still amazingly good (although I may have rose-tinted specs). The storyline is brilliant, the amount of choice you have each mission (do you shoot everyone, sneak past, hack the turrets, swim through a secret passage, or overload a junction box to progress? You choose!) is pretty huge

It's on the Unreal Engine, I believe and thus looks and feels like an FPS. However you have stats that affect your ability to do certain things - picking locks, hacking computers, being accurate with various types of weapon, swimming. Also, as a bio-engineered agent of the Government you have access to various nano-augmentation. Your weapons can also have mods installed to make them more accurate, reduce recoil, etc.

The story is pretty fucking sweet - at the start you are told by your Government superior types that there is a terrorist hiding in the bombed-out remains of the Statue of Liberty and you have to find him and interrogate him. There's a plague sweeping the US and these terrorists have stolen a shipment of the cure.

From there, it's up to you how you proceed - frontal assault, sneaky sneaky, speak to the various civilians to find a back way in, etc. Things appear to be a lot less linear than they really are, which is nice. I always feel like I'm not being bounced from mission to mission, but each one is a logical progression. Also, there are a few sort-of side quests (more like optional quests that aid your/the storyline's progression). Oh, and in the entire game, you need only kill one person. Although, on the flipside, pretty much everyone in the entire game can be killed, if you so choose.

Finally, there's more than one ending and it's your choice (and quite obviously your choice) as to which ending you get.

tl;dr - buy Deus Ex cos it is well good.
