I bought Deus Ex Human Revolution a couple days ago and the entire time I was playing it I had this nagging part of my brain that said "Hey this is familiar" and then today it finally clicked. Deus Ex Human Revolution's game play reminds me a lot of Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodline's game play. Obviously Deus Ex is less buggy and more polished but the over all game play feels very much the same to me.

What do those of you who are familiar with both games think? Am I grasping at straws or is Deus Ex HR the scifi version of Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines?

You're boiling it down a lot.

They're both first person.
They both have RPG elements.
They both take place in dirty cities.
They both have quests to do.

But that's really it. :p I say you're grasping at straws and trying to hook together the most basic elements of the gameplay.

I was mainly referring to how you can do each mission multiple ways and it doesn't seem to punish you for any given path. How each uses a mission hub based system and encourages exploration. Each also has a hacking mechanic but often lets you find keys to doors and or passwords on guards or laying around.

I'd really like Edios Montreal to do a sequel to bloodlines or even just another game in the same Vampire the Masquerade setting, they've already shown they are capable given how fun Deus EX HR is.

I was actually having this conversation and decided to Google i anyone else thought this... It goes way beyond being the same genre or basic mechanics. The level layout, the hub system, how the quests are presented, to even the NPC models and stances. This is hugely reminiscent of Vampire in an excellent sort of way!

First few minutes in the streets and i thought the exact same thing :)

It´s like a polished AAA Bloodlines II with cyborgs instead of vampires. Which is of course an awesome thing! And i dont mean to say, that deus ex hr copied from VB (most likely VB copied from deus ex I :), but whatever).

I realy enjoy/ed all 3 games and would recomend to anyone who likes de:hr to try out bloodlines (with the fanpatch to fix bugs and add some features).

Good catch.

Technically, Vampire- Bloodlines is an urban fantasy version of the first Deus Ex, and what many people in the Deus Ex fandom consider to be the true sequel to Deus Ex, if only spirit and not so much in name or content, as I have said many times here on the Escapist in the past, and this post I made several months ago in particular:

Hmm, Bloodlines is a strange beast. How do you feel about Deus Ex? Because basically Bloodlines is what Deus Ex 2 should have been with less labrynthine world-dominating plots and more vampires with world-dominating plots, wielding katanas and magical powers....
So yeah. Don't think you're crazy or anything.

Only in the sense that Vampire: the Masquerade: Bloodlines is the White Wolf World of Darkness version of the original Deus Ex.

There are a *lot* more similarities than are being mentioned here.

This is by no means a full list:
Prostitutes
Police officers
Thugs
Homeless people
Black merchant by a van
Hospital in the starting town
Self indulged cocky overlord that you work for.
Your mate (as far as I know) is killed right at the beginning.
Sewers
Invisilibity/Obfuscate
Noise/alert/hostile states
Rebel faction (Anarchs)
Hacking/emails

Actually, upon closer examination, the team that finished up Deus Ex was heavily comprised of key ex-Looking Glass people. No wonder it was so good.

YES! i never played the original deus, but vtm:b was bloody amazing.. i so wish they had taken the time to finish it properly and polish it some..

thoroughly enjoying HR so far! i love when games give you freedom.. for instance i just crossed a corridor with electrocuting water by using 2 crates as stepping stones and moving them... it probably wasnt THE way to get past, but it worked!
