Just a quick question about Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

I was thinking of playing it, and wanted to know: Am I going to be confused, or missing any important information, if I play it WITHOUT playing Deus Ex first? Or can I just dive right in, and everything will be explained?

And even if it won't be confusing, will there be returning characters and plot points which mean that I should play Part 1 first?

Since it's a prequel, you can play it first. However, DXHR makes some references that might seem meaningless to those who haven't played the original.

Not at all! The plot is very much on it's own but fits in with the series and Deus Ex takes place a good few decades after Human Revolution. The only real linking between the two games is in a small bit of dialogue you hear after the credits. I think there's only two characters from Deus Ex that appear in Human Revolution and it's only very briefly. One appears at the very beginning and the very end and the other one is some guy you have to break out of captivity and I think it's only in a DLC mission.
