The first level was quite interesting but I always ran out of ammo for weapons too quickly in the game even though all the shots I made never missed.
You're doing it wrong. No-one says you have to kill all the guards, and in fact it's probably better that you kill as few of them as possible, for reasons you'll discover if you ever decide to give the game another shot...
I never killed them
I tranq-ed them.
Because pistols suck and a non lethal approach is always better

In the tutorial I just pushed a box into the water and used it to jump out. Almost felt like I was doing something wrong, ignoring all those set pieces like that...

What good were the tnt crates, anyway?

Yeah I found it ridiculously difficult as well. I try stealth and get caught time and time again. I try shooting and die. And I'm playing on easy.

On the subject of the Deus Ex tutorial, I tossed a box of TNT at the bot, he shot it, blew himself up and blew my legs off as well. Managed to get across the river by using boxes as platforms. Thankfully, the tutorial ends two corridors later.

On the subject of tutorials that kill you, the tutorial for AI War: Fleet Command is meaty. Once I lost due to me triggering a wave of 300 or so Mark IV Space Tanks, which then proceed to destroy my base. Hmm...

I don't think Deus Ex is monstrously hard.. I actually enjoyed playing it on realistic, though I was being stealthy (playing a straight combat character on realistic would be pretty heavy towards the end, subcutaneous body armour only goes so far).

Seriously, don't try and take out all the guards.. remember, even if you're not playing a stealthy character you're a secret agent so you need to be cautious and smart. Hack security terminals so you don't get busted by the cameras, use the lean keys to lean out of cover (why do modern FPS games never have the ability to lean) if you want to check what a guard is doing and detonate those barrels full of gas if people start swarming you. Also many enemies in Deus Ex have a pretty short visual radius and some very stupid cues (like standing still and loudly vocalizing that they might have spotted something as soon as they come into visual range) so don't be afraid to sit back and work out patrol routes and such before making your move.

Also, you're doing the stun prod wrong. Unless your victim is completely unaware, zapping them will just leave them standing there for a few seconds. Zap them again during that time and they should go down.

Also.. you don't have to listen to Paul. If you want to go through like a berserk angel of death with a sniper rifle you can. Certain characters reactions to you will change, but generally in the first mission you aren't making any life or death choices, and Anna likes it when you play rough with the NSF. :p

There and old Roman saying, from Cicero that goes: Everytime you mention Deus Ex someone, somewhere will reinstall it.

On that note: I have 2 extra copies on Steam after buying the 8-pack in the sale. First 2 to PM me can have them. Any takers?
