I haven't played the first, or second one in the series, and as the third is coming out on my birthday, I thought about getting it for myself as a gift. I know Human Revolution is a prequel to the first two, but are there any big reveals it may spoil for me in the later games (without telling me what they are, of course)? I'll be buying the first two (or at least the first) game either way, but HR just looks to fucking awesome to wait.

How could a prequel make big reveals about games set in its future :p

I can tell you that the pre-build for DE3 didn't have any spoilers for DE1 and 2. It's not a series that has huge spoilers (like OMG Aerith died or w/e) anyways, since there's so much choice that your ending and your major choices will be completely different from mine. I've heard there will be passing references to characters from DE1, though that's not really spoilers.

I'd still recommend playing DE1 to get yourself pumped up for DE3, but that's your choice. Invisible War is alright, but forgettable, so you don't really have to play that at all.

I'd play the first one now just because you can. However if you wanted a continuous story you could wait and get 3, then play 1 and 2. It would be literally impossible for a prequel to have spoilers in it just because of the nature of it being a prequel so I wouldn't worry, and to be honest the story in the Deus Ex series is really quite awful, it's the type of b-grade sci-fi conspiracy hogwash that Traci Lords would probably star in if it were a movie. What makes Deus Ex (the first one) good is the big environments, variety of tactics available and multiple ways to solve each problem, not the story.

Play the first Deus Ex, skip the second. Don't worry too much about spoilers, either - the games take place decades apart, and seem to have a very different tone. (The first Deus Ex was very X-Files-by-way-of-Neuromancer, and what I've seen of the new one is reminding me of Ghost in the Shell.)

Ok, I was thinking that there may be something along the lines of watching revenge of the sith before the empire strikes back, the 'Luke I am your father' thing won't be much of a surprise. Thanks for the help.

Maybe, but the story in Deus Ex is still better than most video games for better or worse. Also, the conspiracies may be silly but I think they did a good job of implementing silly conspiracies into their story. I think of it as the same way when I play a video game that has things like magic spells. A story can have as much silliness as it wants but as long as that silliness is logically coherent within the narrative's world I don't think it matters.

I actualy liked the second game quite a bit... I don't really get the hate the game gets... I mean, it wasn't as good as the first one but still better than most games. Universal ammo doesn't even annoy me because it makes sense to me depending on the setting and stuff. It is funny how sometime I see people complain the second one is too much of a shooter but yet melee is actually much easier in it especially if you get the right kind of mods. I mean, the universal ammo in a sense makes it so you got to be more careful with your ammo and not overuse weapons that use too much ammo.

::HIDES::

Anyway, to be on topic I think you should play the first two simply because their graphics are worse and their gameplay is more old skool. If you play the third one first and hten go back to the earlier two, you may not be feeling like dealing with the differences in older games when you already experienced a deus ex game with newer style of gameplay.

I think you should definitely get the first one and even try the second one. Just don't expect huge levels and be ready for universal ammo. The story in teh second one I think is also better than the first one in some ways with more morally grey groups and better pseudo philosophy but more dumbed down science fiction though.

I think the third one has more in common with the second one story wise than some would care to admit, I see a similarity with purity first and the templers from the second game.... With how the third game will be dealing with mechanical augmentaiton prejudice while the second game dealt with nanoaugmenation prejudice. I don't think the first game delt with that issue that much at all to be honest.
