Deus Ex: The Fall Disables Weapons on Jailbroken Devices

Deus Ex: The Fall won't allow players with jailbroken iOS devices to fire their weapons, according to a report on Reddit.

declared it legal [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_jailbreaking] in 2010 but Apple still takes a dim view of it and in most cases, jailbreaking your phone will void the warranty.

Even so, the experience of Reddit user KipEnyan is extremely unusual. When he attempted to stun an enemy shortly after he began playing Deus Ex: The Fall for the first time, a message popped up saying, "You can't fire on jailbroken devices."

"I've never had this happen before, on either a rooted Android device or a jailbroken iPhone, and I've used both extensively for years," he wrote in response to follow-up questions. "This is the first time I've ever seen a developer pull anything like this, and it is wildly unacceptable."

"This is massively offensive on Square Enix's behalf. The obvious implication is that all jailbreakers are pirates who more than likely pirated this game. I paid good money for this game and Squenix feels it's okay to break my game because I prefer to customize my iPhone to my liking," he wrote. "Jailbreaking was declared perfectly legal, so pulling shit like this shouldn't be."

According to App Store [http://www.polygon.com/2013/7/11/4515082/deus-ex-the-fall-jailbroken-ios-devices-guns-disabled] made the same complaint about the game, although the review it referenced no longer appears to be there. We've reached out to Square Enix for more information and will update if and when we hear back.

I agree completely. I buy all my games, but my device is jailbroken, I just like to customize. Although I'm not as angry as this guy I still this it's ridiculous and should be fixed asap.

Now I'm glad I didn't buy this as soon as I heard it was really good... : /

Piss off legitimate players, damage company relations, game cracked in nanoseconds. Fine example of DRM.

At least it's not ATB.

That was a dick move. People should be able to mod the devices that the payed for. And of course it's fixed. So it wasn't only a dick move, it was a futile dick move.

Yes it is sad seeing them keep trying the same DRM tricks when every single time they do, the consumer cracks it in no time.

Why the hell would game developers do this? It's none of their concern if a device has been jailbroken..

On the one hand, I like off the wall solutions to piracy like this.

OTOH, it would be nice if it was a solution to actual piracy.

So their plan to get back on people that jail broke their device, but paid for the game, was to disable their weapons? Which you don't really need as it's a Deus Ex game and you SHOULD be able to sneak past everybody.

So let me get this straight Square-Eidos.

Hype up your game, disappoint everyone when it's a mobile exclusive, sell your game on mobile devices, punish people who own a jail broken device, not just the illegal downloads, any and all jail breaks, step ?, profit?

Could someone get these anti-psychotics to the Square-Eidos office, they seem to desperately need it.

Just as I thought. This the real bullshit reason they made it an iOS exclusive: because it's easy to side load apps onto android. Oh noes, every one who wants control over their hardware and software is clearly a pirate. I see they patched it after realizing how short sighted and stupid it is kill apps people paid for.

Also, it's not like a shit ton of people jail break their i-devices or something /sarcasm

..I'm assuming that you didn't ask for this.

When was the last time that joke was made, by the way? Has it become funny again?

OT: stupid move on Squeenix's part and it's hilarious just how quickly it has been circumvented. I wonder what their official line will be on it, if they'll bother to apologise or U-turn, or if they'll just stick their head in the sand and shout a muffled nonsensical and redundant defence out at their detractors.

Isn't it ironic that the theme of the game is human augmentation and freedom of choice, and users get punished for "augmenting" their device.

Well, that was quick. At least it stopped those filthy pirates for a few hours! Now Eidos have nothing else to do but sit back and watch those 100 metacritic scores ride in on the backs of their sacks full of cash.[/sarcasm]

I wonder whether they spent a lot of money developing this unbeatable DRM and if in a few months we will hear news of how iDeus iEx wasn't profitable.

You know, sometimes I wonder if Square Enix would run better if we replaced most of the employees with these would-be pirates.

I'm still of the opinion that Jailbreaking should be illegal.... As in, it should be illegal to lock users away from doing whatever they want with the hardware they payed for.

Want your hardware to sell? Try making it a good piece of hardware rather than relying on locked software stores and exclusivity deals.

Anyway, back to the outrage.
