I've just done a search for Deus Ex (what with seeing all you gonzo's keep saying SEARCH to n00bs like myself) and I for one am shocked and appalled, you people haven't dedicated an entire thread and immortalised it in this forum, its all Fallout 3 and Oblivion!.

anyway discuss!
firstly, the name, Im sure we can all agree its AWESOME, and the irony that Warren Spector moaned about the Deus Ex Machina of modern videogames only to go and do it himself. Also any game that has a character called "tracer" deserves some sort of award.

Right could I hear your Deus Ex stories?
I strolled into the game with the mindset I usually go into with FPS' only problem is its not really an FPS so I had my ass handed to me on a plate for the first 3 days of playing by the first enemy I came accross. Each time i've played it i've had a different experience and different paths to chose over the locals.

Although even with a supped up PC the frame rate is pathetic!, I upgraded my PC so I good have a smooth play experience only to find the game engine had been optimised at "stutter", it hasn't effected my enjoyment too much but several times i've lost fire fights because of the dodgy frame rate.

Deus Ex was a pretty awesome game. The sequel... not so much. We're all hoping Deus Ex 3 isn't so badly streamlined - at least the engine can be nothing but an improvement.

Deus Ex 3 is looking pretty tasty, but no word one the game aspect, Eidos are being tight lipped which I'm guessing means they haven't figured out what to actually do!.

oh hell yeah, the second one shows it was designed for consoles, the way you played them probably eased you into the game. The first game is really tough on first play through.

I liked both games. Yes I'm aware of the serious shortcomings of Invisible War but I still felt it was a good game. Nowhere near the awesomeness of the first game by any shot but still good nonetheless.

I'm going to have to play it again to get the killphrase, apparently the same can be done with Gunther.

After adjusting myself to the play style the only time I went guns blazing is at area51 when your pilot gets killed, I went mad!

So on the second playthrough I was getting prepared to lose my good friend Jock, only to find the game decided he wasn't gonna die this time. That day my brain melted from all the hot happy inside.

I think you can get the kill phrases by hacking into one of the UNATCO terminals. I'm not sure which one but I got both kill phrases for Gunder and the girl.

thats just not on!, right next play through I'm choosing hacker. and aqualung, there are some serious upgrades to be had in china if you can swim long enough!

My problem with the game was that the engine was not really sufficient for an RPG, and that even one realistic mode my enemies could take five sniper rounds to the face, could hear me if I had just knifed their buddy to death 100 feet away behind their back while sneaking, and that it didn't matter that you had 1000000 in lockpicking, hacking, computers and tinkering, if you ran out of multitools, you are screwed. Besides the lack of a place to get the bloody tools though, and the engine, I really liked it. The story was good, you could take a stealthy approach, and it was cyberpunk.

I never actually found the kill phrase. But let me seriously recommend against aqualung. Swimming is actually a better choice in my eyes because of the speed increase (though not everyone will agree). And you don't need either if you take regeneration and have bioelectricity to burn. There are a few other places where it gives mad loot.

I'm personally waiting for the fan-made high definition texture pack to be released (http://offtopicproductions.com/hdtp/), then I'm finally going to sit down and beat it getting the minimum number of kills - including avoiding anna navarre if i manage to pull it off (those who didn't know it was possible - please consult youtube. I'm pretty sure it's genuine.) I've played a few total run throughs in my life, but some how never was in the mood for a complete pacifist run...

Question for those who've played number 2 - i never bothered but should i give it a shot? Is there anything of value there? Or will it just make me sad?

Definition in a game doesn't bother me, frame rate stutter is keyboard smashing frustating.

Oh...its the first time I hear that there were killphrases for them. The game never ceases to amaze me - so many ways to go, so many things to do. And it isn´t even a open-world game! It´s a piece of Art that should have it´s own hall of fame. How can that be that almost everyone can tell you a different story of their time as JC ? Amazing...

Beside your freedom of choice it is the dense, dark and mature cyberpunk ambiance that pulls you into the story and binds you to the characters around you. I played DE only two times (one time as a rifleman/hacker and the second as Thief Garret) but I wasn´t as lucky as ColdStorage and Jock died both times - man was I pissed... especially after failing for the second time to save him! Deus Ex is one of those games that forces you to think, pulls you in with an intriguing story (or shall I say stories ~ a new one every time you start the game), involves you emotionally and gives an unlimited set of ridicules violent ways to work off your anger in case you loose someone dear to you.

And to Dr.Panda ~ yes, you will be disappointed by Invisible War. But you can´t get around playing it since it is still the best Deus Ex out there that you did not play yet. The story of IW is almost as good as part one and even hold lots of hints to the original - you even meet JC again. But it still feels much more shallow, your emotional involvement isn´t as deep as in part one since the characters and your relationship with them are less developed and the gameplay aspect was reduced significantly! You are rarely asked to make finite decisions - you always have the chance to pull out a bioimplant and take the other if you didn´t like it. The whole RPG part becomes a joke as you start out pretty skilled in everything (feels like a regular shooter)and find enough upgrades to master almost all of the sills in the much reduced skill tree. It will no longer happen that you have to throw away a good weapon because you are not skilled enough to wield it. They only increase the amount of "universal ammo" a big weapons need if you have no skills in heavy weaponry ~ so you run bingo in no time and have to make due of the skills you already developed. All in all a disappointing sequel. But still a hell of a game. I didn´t play Fallout 3 yet so I cannot compare those two - but if Deus Ex is what you want?... this reduces the choices to one.
