Diablo 3 being Diablo

Something suddenly dawned on me and I wanted to see if people agree.

Im sure your all aware of the reaction of many people to the 'wow-ish' look of the game (which although they initially said they wouldn't alter, seems to have been ever so slightly tweaked since the original outcry). personally ive always been fine with it, and I think its an artefact of moving to a 3d engine.

anyway that wasn't my point,

For me what mostly makes Diablo is the music. I appreciate the visual aesthetic (who's been watching extra credits I wonder?) but at the end of the day the thing that makes a Diablo game feel like Diablo to me is the music, and its the thing Im most concerned about. so far all gameplay videos seem to be devoid of music, and the character trailers seem to have this ridiculously bombastic music in places that puts me off.

some of the music in the previous diablo games has genuinely been beautiful (wow that's gay) like harrogath and Tristram or eerie like the catacombs music or the durance of hate. I've yet to hear anything thats impressed me, which worries me.

To me the music of Diablo is more important than the asthetic they have chosen, it might not be perfect but its fine. All the music Ive heard so far has just been really cheesy, and it worries me.

just wondering what you guys thought :)

I never listened to the music in Diablo, so it doesn't bother me. In fact, whenever I hear REM's 'Out of Time' album I think of Diablo, because that's what I used to listen to when playing.

EDIT - I can even tell you the exact track that was playing the first time I completed the game: 'Near Wild Heaven'. It's so weird that I can remember that.

ok point 1, theres an edit button, point 2 i agree with you on the music side of things while everything looks great, the graphics, characters, settings abilities, etc etc it does seem to be lacking audio...

although i do love how they have reused the sounds of gold and gem drops from diablo 2, that made me smile, as for the character trailers, they didnt amuse me at all, if i saw them first it would of probably put me off

Atmosphere is huge, I have to agree. I remember the first time I played Diablo 2, making my way to the scorched Tristram, and hearing those familiar strings. I was awestruck, and it took the experience to a whole new level. That's part of why I could never get behind "Tristram runs" to power level, or anything like that. The game for me had gone to a whole new level of experience, and EXP wasn't about to ruin the... uh, experience.

I have been largely not paying attention to Diablo 3 content releases. I don't like to get worked up to far off from the release dates. But I did watch the recent trailer posted here, and something just didn't feel right. It looked like Diablo, but something didn't click.

The only piece of Diablo-related music I can remember is the one from the Lord of Destruction Outro. So I guess I'd have to disagree, under the assumption that I would have been able to remember the music, had it been interesting.

Also, posts can be edited.

Meh the music from the first Diablo or was it Diablo two? Bah can't remember, any way from what I played of it I didn't find the music all that amazing of course this could be due to only playing the first section of the game and having no idea what I was doing... Anyway it's entirely possible that the music in the trailers are just that. In the trailers so the music could be entirely different in the actual game we will just have to wait and see. Oh and I disagree although the Demon Hunter doesn't seem Diablo-esque in relation to the other games, I still think the class sounds awesome.

was talking about the music, not audio. Big difference.
the music and soundtracks never really cought me or astrounded me, unless its a special cut-scene or big moment or whatever, and even then I usualy forget it afterwards

I just love Roguelikes and D3 is likely to be the best graphically and it's made by my favourite games company.

Diablo 2 music was boring. The Harem and Kurast are the only ones with actual melody. Holding 2 notes for 5 minutes to sound semi-scary isn't actually music to me. It's musical, but... nothing to listen to.

Lord of Destruction on the hand... wow. That whole 5th act is pure aural beauty. The intro, the town, the siege, the icecaves, the tower, Baal... one great track after the other. I ripped them from the gamefiles and have them in iTunes.

Copy/pasted FYI:

"Russell Brower is the Director of Audio and Video at Blizzard Entertainment, and is one of their chief composers of game music.

His/Blizzard Quote:
Hi Peter,
Thank you for your thoughtful words. I?m really glad to hear how much you care about the Diablo series and its musical legacy. Maybe it will help in terms of ?reassurance? for me to note that my own personal introduction to Blizzard games was in 1997 in the form of playing the first Diablo and being struck by the music? Matt Uelmen had succeeded in creating something original, which is a rare thing these days. The style was daring and completely unexpected, yet it worked so very well.

In regards to Diablo III?- all I can say is ?you ain?t heard nothing yet!? The overture was conceived of as a way of making a big impression on both new and existing audiences?saying that this really is the next chapter. What?s not apparent in the overture, though, is that the first indication the world had of what the new game was at our Paris announcement last Summer was a single guitarist on a 12-string, rolling those classic opening chords?not a speech, not a video, not a press release?but the MUSIC. That iconic music! I?m very proud of this moment, as it not only says a lot about how great the D1, D2 & D2X music is, but how important and recognizable game music in general has become.

Finally, if you listen to Matt?s writing in D2X Lord of Destruction, you?ll hear not only most of the thematic material from the overture, but also the ?Wagnerian? orchestration?Clearly, Matt was exploring new areas of musical expression in parallel with where the game?s story lead him. I believe that in playing D3 someday, you?ll hear homage to the iconic styles in all the right places, along with new music to go with some very exciting story developments and locales.

I?m not at liberty to say much more, as I don?t wish to provide any spoilers? however, I hope you?ll stay tuned as we roll out more information (and music) in the future.

(By the way?the Eminence recordings you mentioned are awesome, but they are Eminence?s own interpretations/homages (?cover? versions)?those recordings are not part of the official D3 project, save the original overture recording on which they performed.)

All my best,

-Russell"

There's music in Diablo? Hmm...interesting. I haven't really looked up much about D3 since I know I'm going to buy it so I don't need to convince myself of it.
