when the Diablo III come to us
Runestones in Diablo III seem like they will work like skill enhancements and will be placed onto the skill. There are 5 different runestones and each skill can have 1 runestone placed in them ( Crimson, Indigo, Obsidian, Golden, and Alabaster.)
