Women can't be frontline troops, right? So why add them to a game that wants to be "realistic"?
The Canadian military has had female frontline troops for decades.

All I can say is...

Dis gonna be good.

I really couldn't care less if they do or do not decide to put female soldiers in the game, but arguments where both sides try to pretend this is actually important are going to be amazing.

Im pretty sure Recon is female
Yeah totally could be. I don't look much different than that in BDU. The character model even has relatively delicate bone structure.

Seriously, just looking at Recon and Assault, there's not much they'd have to change aside from voiceovers to have truly realistic female character models. It's only if they wanted unrealistic character models that they'd have to add in camo catsuits/exaggerated pornstar hip-waggle runs/etc.

I mean, R6V2 had them; they just shaved down the shoulders and enhanced the hips of the female model's silhoutte. It looked fine. It looked professional and accurate. And if they're worried about hitboxes, just don't give them smaller hitboxes. I'm 5'11" myself - tall, larger women exist (and many of us end up in physical professions!).

So an empty character model is going to have a couple of lumps on its chest that likely won't be visible through the uniform and body armor? Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

+1 for equality you guys!

Why can't multiplayer games simply have the models wearing so much armour, you can't tell what gender they are, and then record about thirty different grunts from both sexes simply so they don't have to do to the work of creating a female model that isn't sexualised, but definitely looks feminine without simply being a male model but thinner?

And to be honest, aside from an MMO, does anyone ever attribute gender relations to their multiplayer character aside from their gamertag/PSN Title/PC equivalent?

The article said the voice acting would have to be done twice, once each for either sex, meaning paying for more voice actors and more motion capturing, as well as the modelling and animation.

I seriously believe these people when they say that the main reason there aren't women in these games is to simply save money, and has nothing to do with sexism.

I agree that it should change, and we should be able to play as both men and women (unless it's vital to the story), but with games costing as much as they do, and the sheer amount of man power needed to make these games that a company like DICE makes, it must be so tempting to simply not bother adding extra work into it.
You can believe what you want, but what about the female models that already exist, the voice actresses for them, and well, until they make a female protagonist only game instead of relying on white male straight default, I'll respectfully disagree.

Seriously, how much more would it cost vs potential new customers, and the generally massive sales they always have?

Also,
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/6073-Lets-End-the-FPS-Sausage-fest
it doesn't have to be prohibitively expensive.
How often do you see females in modern military shooters? Can't remember the last time I saw a female in a Battlefield game at all, maybe Bad Company?

And even then there is absolutely no depth to the female characters. Probably no mo cap, one cheap female voice actor to just make screaming noises. Nowhere near enough resources to properly apply a strong female presence to the game.

I don't personally know what the cost to benefit ratio would be, and I doubt the developers do either, and I'm sure that's what scares them so much.

I'm not saying stop caring about it and just brush it off, but trying to force it into a major issue just seems counter productive. Also, implying that people don't buy their game just because they don't get to be a female seems arrogant on their part in my honest opinion. Just as arrogant as the guys that won't buy a game because it doesn't have "white male straight default".
Very rarely do we see them. That, some lack of bots AFAIK, and the community (I.E. people fighting against female representation in these games) are pretty much the reasons I don't bother with modern military shooters. Not since Rainbow Six Vegas 2 have I really bothered.

Depth's irrelevant to me, honestly, in some cases. I want representation, period. Even if it's form, and shallow script. especially if it's generally on par iwth the effort put into guys.
It probably sounds petty to you, but it sounds petty to a lot of guys that get metric tons of representation in games, too.

Women that don't buy games because they don't feel welcome by them vs. men that are intensely catered/pandered to sticking to the vast sea of male protagonist games? I think it's a little different.
Honestly, I don't understand why it's so hard for people to utilize empathy to try and understand how little games actually welcome women. It doesn't take much effort to see how rare female protagonsits are, and even rarer is the conservatively dressed modern woman.

Frankly, opinions on the matter don't matter to me. I'm more inclined to go for inclusion over most other things. Voting with my wallet for what little it's worth since it doesn't seem to make a damn.

I'm not trying to force it, but I am going to talk about it until change happens.

And into the minefield they walk.

Or maybe not if they don't give a crap what journalists hungry for the next controversy and people like those on these forums say.

Female soldiers have been in games way longer than just Natural Selection 2. I point you back to Starseige Tribes. And I'm sure someone else will correct me with female characters in other games that I may not be able to remember at the moment or not even know of.

Only issue I could really see here is hitboxes. If the female soldiers have a smaller frame and are harder to shoot it kind of ruins it. There is a reason everyone used characters like Anya in gears of war. Oh and of course the inevitable complaints about women characters getting killed online equating to supporting violence against women (you know it will happen don't lie).

Just make them able to carry less and run for shorter distances :p

True without a doubt also. They will find some way of fitting it in. Even if they have to make custom maps themselves where the (male) player character has to go around stabbing women in a basement.
