I just had a marvel of an idea. It probably wont work, but i'd like to throw it out there just to see what the Escapists think.

Now, as many of you have noticed there seems to be some contention about the definitions of some words. We have threads about them from time to time. So i propose that a new class in school be set up. A dictionary class. I know that English classes the world over do certain things to increase the vocabulary of children, but i don't think its enough. A dedicated class, just to improve the vocabulary of kids sounds like a great idea to me. What do you think?

No one would pay attention in it though (speaking as a 16 year old), it would be the most boring class.

My English teacher always used to tell us not to read the Bible - read the dictionary instead. Far more practical use. I think it's a good idea, although it'll never inform people when to use there, their and they're.

Wow, nice waste of time. Why not just encourage reading at a young age? Even with comic books, for Christ's sake. I started out reading Donald Duck when I was 4-5 years old (nice scamp, eh?) and now I read books in foreign languages.

I tend to agree with you, but you never know, something might stick with you. I know if they had to pass it to graduate their ears would perk up and they'd pay attention just enough to get the c's they'd need to pass.

English has always been my favourite subject and I've always loved reading and learning about language, but I think even I'd find a dictionary class boring.

I don't think the problem with a lot of kids is that they aren't taught enough at school; it's that they aren't encouraged to read enough at home.
