No, but it was sure as hell fun.
Actually, I admit, at the time of playing I DID get very creeped out (to the point of regusing to move for about ten minutes) right near the start. When you're walking around the foggy countryside. BEFORE any enemies appear.

Once you actually see/massacre the bad guys, the game stops being scary in any way. Just like how Amnesia is at its scariest when there is NOTHING around.

Only the Regenerators were mildly scary, but other than that I had no problems playing through the game as if it wasn't a survival horror shooter.

Only the late game regenerators, honestly.

But I don't really care whether it's scary or not, and still prefer RE5 over it in most ways.
How? 5 is terrible... The menus were awful, the creatures were awful and the story was awful... Mostly they made Wesker awful. The multiplayer was a joke. Let me stand still with my ridiculous weapons and have a western style draw.

On Professional, the fight with IT on the cargo containers was pretty intense and I guess scary. That bastard would pop up and just slice you in half.

I think the most scary parts were the monsters whom could insta-kill you. I think the survival element actually kicked in when facing them and hence it became pretty frightening.

Atmosphere-wise the game wasn't scary, although hearing the sound of a regenerator somewhere near by was as close as you'd get to a chilling atmosphere.

For me, the game was less scary, it was more the music made the game scarier and then the situations behind it all that made it scarier.

This is much scarier than the actual fight with Bitores Mendez (AKA The Sid Haig Boss Battle)

The sound effects and stuff help too, but its the music in the situations that made is scarier to me. When I play games, sound is the most important part for me, and if it doesn't sound right, it's not going to work for me most of the time anyway.
Seriously.. thats what made Silent Hill 1 scary as shit was random sounds and music. Or lack of in alot of cases.

And who can forget: Where's everyone going? Bingo?

Regen scared the crap out of me, only because they wouldn't FUCKIN DIE! I blasted one's feet off with my Striker and then the SOB jumped and bit me in the neck! Besides, how can you not at least cringe when something breathes like this:

I was hiding in a corner with nothing but my pistol and I could hear this thing breathing. Brrrr...

Other than that, probably the right hand. The environment did most of the work, though.

Writhe in my cage of torment!

Anyway, it's been said: fun, but not scary, except for the regenerators before you get the thermal scope.

It had a small creep vibe at the start... then the bug things in that midget's castle were scary for 4 seconds....and then the regenerators.

It has short bursts of scaryness, but overall...not really. It's tension.

Bittores Mendez kinda freaked me out...as did the "Right Hand"...I think it has to do with "claustrophobia"....mentally it feels like you don't have enough room to manoeuvre in. Same with the Regenerators...tight corridors. Plus their breathing and Hellraiser looks. Also, the very first Garrador....and the first Dr Salvador. Then you know how they move and strike and suddenly they are pushovers.

It's all about "space management" and timing.

The first time I fought the regenerators, I found it chilling, that cold environment was so scary, and the subtle breathing noises they made freaked me the fuck out.

The part in the garden with the dogs, that part even after 20+ play throughs STILL creeps me out and scares me, because the sudden dogs coming from nowhere just builds into an old fear of dogs I used to have.

Overall, there are some scary moments, but a lot of them are survival scares, rather than atmosphere scares. Seeing the Iron Maiden from nowhere, scary, but the chainsaw reving up for the first game, I'm thinking "I'm dead, oh shit oh shit oh shit"

It's a game that doesn't have the atmosphere set right, but the gameplay is so fun you forgive it's silly story. I will point out the first time I fought the village leader, and thought, "Holy shit, I have to fight that!?" And wondered just how fucked up it was, and while not terrifying, I'll still remember just the epic horror aspect of that moment in my mind today

It has a much greater sense of progression. Money is more common, making upgrades more frequent. And more guns are found, unlike RE4, which were basically all bought. Also, RE5 let you replay levels for more supplies if you get in a pinch.

Krauser's skill with a knife was pretty damn terrifying.
Although it was scary in a "Oh shit! How the fuck did he do that!?" kind of way.

3 things, regenerators, the mysterious bag in the dumpster, and the first time las plagas burst from a dudes neck outside of a cutscene terrified the shit out of me. the rest of the game was just creepy, but not scary.

No, not at all. The game was damn entertaining but not that scary. I think minecraft is more scary tbh with all it's random critters.

Yeah not that scary. I dod go "No No no nononononono!" during some parts but mainly because I was having trouble in some parts of the game. Like regenerators. Those buggers pissed me off. As well as the villagers who had the tentacles come out of their heads and one shot you with them.

Oh and I hated those invisible bug things in the castle. Those were fucking annoying. But yeah the game was not that scary.

I was startled a few times and like in the OP, there were some intense moments, but I never felt anything close to "fear" or "dread". I'll plug it RE4 and start blasting away with abandon, I will procrastinate playing Silent Hill 2 because my girlfriend will be home soon and I don't want to play alone. RE4 never did anything close to that.

Well there was a fear of dying in mean they put you in some perilous positions, but its the same scary i get from playing zelda on 1 heart. It was scary in the same way i found silent hill scary and not even in the same way i found condemned scary.
