I spent the whole game having fun, and only occasionally was all, "Oh crap! Oh crap! I'm out of ammo/not hitting that stupid Regenerator in the right spot!", so no, I was not scared in the least playing RE4.

I played it when I was like 12 and I didn't find it scary, even then. The only scary part I found was the opening part in the village/forest (mostly because I did it wrong and never got the shotgun, so I ended up having only the pistol for a lot longer than I should have) and the hospital where the Iron Maidens showed up. And a couple of the boss fights were pretty intense...

But overall, nah it wasn't that scary. Still my favorite game of all time, though.

I have to give it points for making me shit my pants. I was at the part where I was killing bugs in the sewers. It's dark and since the bugs are invisible I'm intently looking at the screen for splashes so I can kill the bugs before they attack me. Suddenly a ladybug flew from the TV straight at me and landed on my glasses. I jumped out of my seat, ripped off my glasses and ran backwards until I realized what happened.

It had some moments. For instance, the village was a little creepy the first time with the maggot skulls and woman stuck to a wall with a pitchfork. The chainsaw guy was scary the first time especially. After that, there was the house defending with Sera which was a bit thrilling.

The game had some good scares in the beginning, but fell off as you gained more and more artillery to kill everything you saw.

The parts that stick out the most though would be that monster you can kill by freezing with nitrogen, the regeneraters, and the sack monster.

I don't know about scary but the atmosphere, especially in the village, was spot on. I mean SPOT on. In terms of "scary", I'd say the closest it got was the prison block on the island with the regenerator (the room with the wiggling meat sack in the dumpster). The audio for that part was pretty good. RE4 really didn't have the classic resident evil audio design though and I didn't find it scary like the first few games.

Like everybody and their grandmother has said, I found the game more tense than scary, until the regenerators which legitimately scared me.

Most of it, no. The Regenerators/Iron Maidens are scary and the bag in a dumpster was creepy as hell. The Ashley segment was also scary the first few times. Every other time you're just way too powerful to be scared of anything.

I have played RE4 many, many times. It is one of my favorite games. The only thing I dislike about it is that its genre is supposed to be "action/horror," but I never found it very scary. Sure, lots of parts of it were very intense, (Like the opening fight in the village.) but none made me feel frightened. It got me thinking about whether anyone found it scary.

So escapists, that is my question, did you find RE4 scary?
I'm scared of zombies so yes. Also afraid of Latinos.

not really scary but it had me really on edge, with the adrenaline pumping and heightened reflexes
I'd call it immersive and it just got me in the mindset.

I always played it at night in the dark and did find it scary, but I dunno I was younger back then? Not sure if that's why.

Being my first proper horror game, I was quite scared by it, as I had no idea what to expect. Now it's more tensing and creepy than anything. U3 terrified me at first. But then: Chicago Typewriter came along (untill I played on professional the first time).

The scariest part was playing as Ashley as you went from being Leon S Kennedy, with enough guns, ammo and grenades to take down a whole village and stronghold, to a whining screechy brat who had no means of protecting herself other than throwing lanterns at the enemies and crawling under tables. Other than that, it was more fun than scary, because there were ammo drops every minute and every couple of steps or so. When you get the final guns and have them all upgraded the game is a walk in the park pretty much. So, no. It's not that scary.

I found it scary as it was my first "horror" game. I had played Half-Life 2 before, but wasn't used to this kind of "gore". Now, I don't think it's "scary", but still a very good game.
I also like "quotation marks".

If I wasn't already accustomed to horror video games, I'd find it terrifying.

There were a couple parts I found scary, like the first time the Ganados' heads burst into tendrils, and the existence of those fucking regenerators, and the inexplicable flaming squirming bag that popped out of a fridge or something.

I didn't find it at all scary on my first time through. I was scared at one point but that was because the regenerators were the only thing between me and any health so it was more of panic then fear, but to be honest I was like eight when I played it.

Nah, I can't say it was scary...except for whenever I heard a chainsaw. I hate chainsaws...and Regenerators.
I do love that game though.
