Did I make a mistake?

I recently received a PS2 for free from a friend. I don't have any games for it, so I picked up a used copy of FFXII because I watched a girl play part of it once and it looked like it could be somewhat decent.

Did I make a mistake in doing this?

Well, I'd say not. You got a free system and a cheap game. I can't quite vouch for FFXII's quality myself, but I would say there are plenty of PS2 games that no one should miss out on. One that everyone will get you to play is Shadow of the Colossus. Ironically enough, I haven't had the chance to play it, but I'm sure many will recommend it to you.

I didn't like FFXII, so I'd say that wouldn't be the game to start with, but I know a lot of people who really enjoyed it.

I personally began with FFX, so it would have been the one I would have told you to start with.

A free system with a game for cheap? i say you got a great deal there however with FF XII you could have gone to a better quality game like Prince of Persia sands of time.

FF12 was really bad, 10 was good though so get that, and pick up the jak and daxter series as well.

Not really. I quite liked FFXII though it recieves a lot of ire from other fans for the Gambit system which can effectively play the game for you once you get enough slots in it.

FFX is generally seen as the best FF game on the PS2, but that doesn't mean FFXII is bad.

Well the story, music, characterisation, dialogue, voice acting and writing is pretty bad.

The combat system and the garment grid are pretty damn fun though, so there is that.

It's fun for what it's worth.
The dialog is horrifically bad, and the License board is junk (depending on what version you got) but it's an enjoyable game, if asked I'd say opt to find an old copy of FFX instead, but you'll certainly have fun with XII. Not a bad purchase at all.

I loved FFXII's characters (which many didn't) but the plot was "meh" and waaaaay too long. I lost interest about halfway because it was all just filler stuff with no importance. Go here, do this, go here, get this, go back here, put this here, etc.
The gameplay's really fun to me, but the difficulty is a freaking roller coaster ride. That was the big reason I gave up on it.

It's worth giving it a try, though, if you're interested in it.

To blazes with the story - what you get from FFXII is a HUGE, varied and massively detailed world where you can literally explore every last inch! People tend to dislike Vaan the She-Man as a protagonist because he doesn't really do anything more worthwhile than simply tagging along for the ride, but SO WHAT? Isn't that basically what the PLAYER is doing?

Besides, if you find the sight of Vaan and his metal bra completely unbearable, remember the new, flexible party system: You'll pretty soon have the option to boot that prettyboy out of the active party and forget about him for most of the game! (Sky pirate Balthier tends to be a popular replacement.)

To sum it up: You've got yourself a great console and a great game. All you need to do now is relax and enjoy! Give FFXII a chance - if you hate it, you can always get another game! Now that the PS3 is large and in charge, you can get dirt-cheap PS2 games by the bucketload on eBay and in game shops everywhere!

Oh, and congratulations on your new PS2! Years of gaming glory await!

Gonna agree with others posters here that if you are looking for a PS2 JRPG, you are better off picking up FFX, though I never actually did play FFXII so I can't really compare the two.

I would say no, the dislike of FFXII is mostly over exaggerated due to it in part containing radical changes to the combat system that has only seen moderate revisions throughout the years.

This being said, the system proves very malleable and shows great scope for customisation. Said customisation also received some flak in its ability to "break the game" much similar to the complaints circling FFVIII's Junction system if you are familiar with it. Like the Junction though, extensive knowledge of the system is required before developing this understanding and as such is a just reward.

In short, ignore criticisms of this nature.

FFXII's story falters lightly, but only when you compare it to other stories within the franchise. As far as comparing it against the medium as a whole it outclasses many.

Add in plenty of post story activities and you have a mammoth to take a lot of your time.

As much as I sing XII's praises, I urge you to get FFX as soon as viable. This game is far superior in my opinion, close to being the best in the franchise. At the very least the battle system is far and away the best.

Alot of people dislike FFXII, but I rather enjoyed it. Thought it was one of the better of the series, especially after FFX, which was a bit pants IMO.

Well, Final Fantasy 12 (I think that's what XII is) has Fran in it... and where Fran is, Fran's ass is.

It is now a tolerable game, also, I've heard that some elements of the gameplay are improved over previous installments in the series.
You've got a sexy black-bunnygirl and supposedly improved gameplay, what more could you want?

Okay, so some of the characters are apparently 2D, it can't all be perfect.

Seriously, I don't see what mistake is here. If you don't like FFXII, get another game. They must be cheap by now, and you can run PS1 games on it if you're really strapped for cash.
