Growing up as I did in the nineties I got used to the never-ending arguments of who was better, SEGA or Nintendo. As a proud Mega Drive owner SEGA were obviously my favourite of the two. Fast forward a decade and a load of hardship for my beloved SEGA and now I?m looking at my Nintendo Wii and wondering why the best games I have for it are made by SEGA. When did the two of them get into bed together?

And for those who are wondering the games that made me realise this were House of the Dead: Overkill and Madworld.

Probably about the time the dreamcast fell through, and Sega needed some platform to support it's games.

They really do make an uncomfortable pair, I can't imagine Sony or Microsoft publishing games on the other's console, but hey you never know what's going to happen.

Well, SEGA takes its new(ish) role as a publisher seriously. Also, you missed the death of Jade Goody this morning.

If your biggest property was a blue cartoon hedgehog which platform would you rather make games for?

1. The console that is mainly for people who like to kill each other in as humiliating a way as possible while making crude observations about peoples sexual orientation and gender.
2. The console for people who like sophisticated adult narratives about spiky haired youths and cybernetic octopus spies.
3. The family friendly console.

The Dreamcast was awesome! Legues ahead of the PS2, Xbox and gamecube at their releases. it had internet play, awesome graphics and the only good 3D sonic games ever!!

Does it really matter?
Me and a friend played House of the dead: Overkill and we had lots of fun.
As long as a games good, I don't care who made it.

Don't you just love irony? Well Sega was in some deep shit (I don't really feel analyzing the whole story, I'm pretty sure someone else will), so to avoid being lost forever in oblivion they had to work together with their arch nemesis (I'm kinda bored of this scenario but oh well). Thus MadWorld was born, a reason to want a Wii, besides No More Heroes.

So bad marketing on the part of SEGA then. I still can't believe the Dreamcast did so badly.
The dreamcast was the best of that generations consoles. The only problem is the sega saturn sucked such copious amounts of wang that it ruined Segas name. So basically the DC got killed by the hype of the ps2 since the little grey box, otherwise known as the PSX, was and still is, one of the best consoles ever.
I did always get the impression that SEGA approached the Dreamcast with far too much confidence in their passed achievements and then misplaced the 'marketing' section of their sales plan.

Took her long enough, didn't it? Wasn't she that awful person on your guys Big Brother, or whatever?
Yeah she was. Died of cancer this morning. But apparently, according to most of my family, it's tragic and I'm a monster for not caring about the death of an uneducated racist. Seriously, she's hoarded all the money she can from dying of cancer and given it to her family. Any of it going to a cancer charity? I'll take no for 500. And no is correct. [/rant]

But anyway, back on topic. I was only about eight or nine when the Dreamcast came out and I remember playing it and I couldn't get around the controls. But from what I remember, the graphics were good for the time and I'm quite surprised it was a flop. Still, SEGA were pretty smart to publish House of the Dead on the Wii... The thing was practically made for rail shooters.

The Dreamcast really didn't do that badly, but the money Sega made from the Genesis/Mega Drive had more than run out due to the Sega CD, 32X, Nomad, Saturn and other less than successful products. Basically they didn't have the money to sustain the Dreamcast for long enough that it would truly become profitable for them.

As for why Sega are supporting Nintendo so much? They're the same generation of game developers. Regardless of what they wanted people to think back during the Sega-Nintendo "war", the two have very similar target demographics.

I'd have lent them a fiver if they'd asked.
