Did Microsoft Give Up On Backwards Compatibility??

Forgive me if this has been broached before as a subject, but a search of the forums yielded nothing.

It's often talked about the short comings of the PS3 and it's decisions regarding backwards compatibility, but I've noticed that Microsoft has seemingly stopped updating it's list of compatible games.

I had desire to play Xmen 2: Rise of APocalypse (yes, sadly I know I can almost count on having no one to play with but sadly, I still love the game enough to wanna go through it again) but looking at the xbox backwards compatibility list on the 360 site, it's not listed as a game that has been tested and patched.

I then noticed that the bloody "list" hasn't been updated since November 2007.

Does that mean they just called it quits and have no interest in updating the rest of their back catalogue? If so thats really crappy of them and a serious let down. Plus, it really makes Sony not look so bad for abandoning BC on their platform.

I'll be even MORE angry if I see this game pop up for 'download' on xbox live. I shouldn't have to re-purchase a game I already own.

So what's the deal? Did Microsoft shaft me again?

They did give up on it. They focused on the original xbox program instead, then abandoned that for 'games on demand'.

It turned out people were less interested in backwards compatibility then initially expected, so they did a bunch of titles that sold well then let the project slide. And frankly there weren't that many games that needed to be carried forward to the 360. The PS3 is the console that needed good BC. My PS2 doesn't work anymore, and just because I didn't buy a PS3 at launch I'll never finish Dragon Quest 8. :(

I still wish I could replay Timesplitters: Future Perfect, but I guess that is just a dream now...

There was an article somewhere about this where a Microsoft employee said, "We're scrapping the time needed to port these games to focus on games for the Xbox 360." They basically said top selling games would have backwards compatibility which leads me to the question, HOW THE HELL IS LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KIND A BETTER SELLING GAME THAN BATTLEFIELD 2: MODERN COMBAT?

This

If you look at the list on xbox.com that list is a shameful collection of some of the most craptacular games ever produced... games that should have ruined a system.
X-men Legends 2 (well hell X-men legends 1 isnt even there!!) is missing on the list but Bass Pro Shops Trophy Hunter 2007 warranted updating?! Seriously, there are like 7 "Cabelas" hunting games on that list, but Spartan Total War isnt?! Who decided what games would make the backwards compatibility list and what wouldnt?

Other games that apparently were deemed worthy of backwards compatibility:

Rugby 2006
Rapala Pro Fishing
Cars
Chronicles of Narnia
Circus Maximus
Digimon Rumble Arena 2
Egg Mania
Gregg hastings tournament Paintball Max
Pure Pinball
Scooby Doo!? Night of 100 Frights
Shrek Super Party

Seriously, X-men legends 2 got knocked off for THAT garbage??
Ugh, I refuse to purchase any downloadable games from this point on.

The backwards compatibility of the Xbox 360 is done via emulation, as they no longer use some of the proprietary hardware that was used in the original Xbox. This means that there is a degree of reprogramming work involved in every game that goes into the backwards compatibility list. Titles that really made use of the proprietary hardware's features and idiosyncrasies are going to be significantly more difficult to port for emulation and, in some cases, simply won't be possible to emulate correctly without major work, making them unfeasible titles for selection.

Did you honestly think they were just grabbing games at random to add to the compatibility list? Educate yourselves a little bit, people. There's a reason for everything that happens, whether you're aware of it or not.

Ah, i See... So Rapala was considerably easier to emulate, and being such a big seller, it made more business sense to spend money porting over as opposed to a game like xmen legends 2, which wasnt popular at all?

Wait.. what??

I remember seeing an article here about their last game update. Does suck that they're being dropped without adding some of the best titles.

At least I still have a PS3 with an Emotion Engine.

Well, Jade Empire, Republic Commando, and KOTOR I & II work, so I'm happy enough. But yeah, it does suck. I'm sure there are other sweet original Xbox games I'm not even thinking of that we'll never be able to play again...
