Did Modern Warfare 2 Sell 7 Million Copies in One Day?

*Shrugs* The game is good. The single player is short, yeah, but it's exciting and they pack a lot of action into those few hours.

What's more the multi-player seems even more fun than the first game, no longer am I dodging martyrdom and 'nade spam all the time. Instead I'm checking overhangs and alleys to make sure that I don't breeze by some punk who wants to kill me. The new multi-player maps are suitably huge and engrossing.

I know it's fashionable to spread the hate jam thick on MW2 at the moment, but that doesn't stop it from being a good game.

Damnit, this is really tempting me. Activision has been pissing me off lately and I don't want them to see a dime of my money, but damnit MewTwo is looking damn fine. I'll probably borrow it from a friend, but damnit if it doesn't look tempting right now...
Well, some of us are more inflamed than others, I guess. The game looks competent, and if that's what the people want, then bravo Activision for giving it to them. I don't see what's wrong with this, I moderately enjoyed Modern Warfare (not enough to buy it) and very much enjoyed World at War (more than enough to buy it), and it seems Activision continued in the trend of the Call of Duty series to make their next game even better.

I do fully intend on buying Modern Warfare 2 for my 360, as soon as my wallet recoups from Borderlands.

Sidenote: How many different versions of a game do you need, I mean jeezy creezy guys, I understand having a slightly more expensive version of the game with some additional content (Hardened), but fucking night vision goggles? That's a little extreme. I get that they're fully functional and all, but it's just kind of pointless to add a trinket that does nothing with the game. And I really don't think they justify the extra $90 you've got to drop on a Prestige Edition.

Life getting busy + getting sucked away from forums and games = fail
>.>
<.<

With that out of the way, I could see this being a possible reality. Not entirely probable (as I always know they inflate sales a little bit and round up/down, and this doesn't count the copies that were possibly pirated), but still possible. I mean, the buildup to Modern Warfare 2 was bigger than to Halo 2; I've been hearing about its existence for a few years now, basically starting just after the first CoD4:MW was released and soared the charts like an eagle on helium and crack. Videos, screenshots, TV spots, T-shirts, hats, bras (okay, that might be a little overdoing it, but I'm sure the MW2 ladies undies set exists SOMEWHERE!!) - if it could hold a logo and water, Infinity slapped its own onto it.

But 7 million is a big number to be throwing out, even if it is correct. GTA4 was a huge success (even if it a bit wonky in my opinion; I'm with Yahtzee on the bit about it being too "realistic and gritty"), and surpassing that in the first 24 hours... I guess its possible. One guy in my PC class actually brought in the edition that included the goggles, which, according to reports I've heard, actually work up to 300 feet, though they could have just gotten lucky with them; I'll have to ask him come this next Tuesday if his worked (personally, I would have locked it up in the trunk and have just talked about having it; then again, I brought in my Limited Edition copy of Dragon Age: Origins to class, so whatever).

However, back to the topic: those numbers just seem off to me. We'll probably be getting more accurate numbers in the next month or so, and then we'll know just how much they really sold. And chances are, it may be smaller than we were told originally, but I doubt it'll be by very much. MW2 is on the fast track to being one of the highest-selling games of all time, if these sales and hype keep up.

*trust me, if you think this was a long synopsis, you shoulda seen what I was going to write. be grateful >.>*

the fact that the goggles from any other source are twice the price of the entire bundle

Pray tell, what on earth would you - or indeed, most gamers anywhere - need functional nightvision goggles for?

I believe that is a question best left unasked. Besides, do you really need to ask what hormone-driven teenage males will do with night-vision goggles?

EDIT: I'll probably buy the game for its single-player mode once #3 is announced (seriously, you don't think they will announce another sometime soon? though MW4 might get a name change [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93516-Modern-Warfare-4-Held-Hostage]), but I still doubt I'll ever touch online mode again >.< People are just total assholes to those new to something.

No they screwed over the Multiplayer, I will not even mention the PC version, but no party chat on xbox? Now I have to listen to every 12 year old who thinks the Riot Sheild is the best gun in the game, yes I said gun, its a direct quote
Isn't there a magical little mute button for that kind of situation?

Not if you want to play using any kind of tactics, especially in Search and Destroy, among other objective based game modes.

Notice how these are UK sales records? As in, the test region for bumping up the price to see how it affects sales? I'm sure this will have a good impact on our wallets...
Well judging by the fact that shops like asda and sainsburys were selling it for £25-£30, i'm not surprised that they sold 4 million copies or whatever it was.

And i'm sorry but what is with all of the naisayers on this thread. I for one, am going to stand up and say congradulations Activision. You have delivered a game of excellent quality, with an emotional rollercoaster of a storyline and with enough content and additional multiplayer to keep me playing for months. Well done.

And since when have games companies not been all about the profit? Emmmmmmmm..........NEVER!!!
Ever single games companies since the beginning of the concept have made games to make money, so please will people stop ripping on IW/Activision for trying to make more money, because I would do exactly the same thing in their situation and you know what? So would you.

PS: People keep on complaining about how IW haven't listened to the fanbase and they've screwed over the public, but i'm sorry, all of yous seem to think that you have some sort of ownership over the game before its released. No, sorry, it's IW's game, they can do whatever the hell they want with it, and you can't do a goddamned thing except to not buy it.

BTW, Bobmaster, most of this isn't directed at you, mostly to other people, the first point is in relation to you though.

You guys need to realize that CoD is all about the multiplayer. Who cares if the campaign is short? I haven't even played the single player yet. All that matters to me is that I was playing CoD4 regularly up until about 2 days ago. I've been loving every minute of MW2, which is basically CoD4 but with way more ability to customize buildouts, and with a new multiplayer co-op component. I have absolutely no reservation with paying 50 bucks for that. As far as the message that we're sending to the gaming industry, it seems to be: if you make an awesome game, with multiplayer that offers hundreds of hours of replay value, a lot of people will buy it. I'm okay with that.

BTW, I game on PC, PS3, and 360. I bought MW2 on 360 because I prefer the ease of use for Xbox Live. I know that all the PC gamers will look down their nose at me because of this, but frankly I don't care. Have fun boycotting every game that doesn't give you exactly what you want, I guess.
Well said man well said the game is fun to play. The campaign was not that good but who cares love the online play.

There goes the neighborhood.

The neighborhood of gaming companies who believe in quality and community feedback rather than profit. But I guess you could argue that boat sailed back when Halo 3 came out. This just snapped the anchor line.
Oh yes, because the game is sooo bad.

Its actually incredibly fun. Story wasn't amazing, but the Gameplay is top notch.

I can understand if you aren't a fan of the genre, but atleast play the damn game before you write it off as a failure.

Such an unprecedented selling is just a bit... suspect. There have been reports in the past of companies purchasing copies of their own games in order to boost sales figures. I wonder...

But then, it's not too unreasonable if you think of Modern Warfare's sales as an extension of fans that had built up around the Call Of Duty franchise for several games.

I heard 4.7 million in the first 24 hours of launch in North America and Britian combined.
