Did red pens at school give you low self-esteem?

That's just silly, I've never felt bad because something was written in red.
I felt bad because I received an F and especially if it was a very big F.
It didn't matter whether it was red or blue, a big F was very noticeable.

yeah, I agree with Arntor. Red pens didn't give me low self esteem, shitty grades gave me low self esteem.

My family was killed by red pens.....it still hurts........
They did the same to me but afterwards they actually went for me. Then a blue pen bursts into action and kicked it's ass.

One time I had a runny nose at school and used two red pens to block my nostrils and it didn't affect my self esteem at all. We are already raising our children to be complete wimps...let's not make them a laughing stock.

Seeing a bunch of X's on your paper will probably lower your self esteem no matter what colour they're in. I like the red because it clearly shows where I've made a mistake, instead of me not seeing mistakes because they were corrected in the same colour as my writing.

Strangely enough I get a bad vibe off of red pens, but that's probably because I find it annoying to read in red for paragraphs telling me why my essay on Greek philosophy sucked.

Still don't care that much though.

1. A mixture between a soft science first year of psychology nightmare and attempting to make everything look better rather than actually get down and do the hard work of fixing a malfunctioning system.

2. Red pens didn't give me my lack of self worth and crippling self-esteem issues. Years of constant peer rejection over minor differences and teacher contempt did help bring that one about, but not red pens.

Could be worse. you know that picture thats circulated around the internet of the failed math test with a McDonalds application stapled to it? My old high school algebra teacher actually does that.
Your high school algebra teacher is my hero, there needs to be more of this kind of reprisal for failing, there needs to be some negative feedback inhibition in our systems and the only way we can attain this is through negative feedback, all we are going to do is create a bunch of whiny introverts that cannot take criticism if we keep up this red-pen(or lack there of) nonsense.

Has anyone else gotten the privilege of seeing a grading scale of A,B,C,D,E because F has a bad connotation to it? That makes me want to put a bullet in whomever came up with that load of bull.

That's ridiculous. Yet again people are trying to find something to blame when it is ouir (a collective 'our' for society) fault. Why don't they research something worthwhile?

It wasn't the color of the ink that bothered me at all. That's just silly. What bothered me about some of the teachers I had was that they would take points off from essays I wrote because they disagreed with the points I was making. I had a couple of classes in high school where they would ask us to write essays about different subjects and would encourage us to include our own opinions or conclusions about what we were researching. I would do so and sometimes find that the teacher had taken points off because they disagreed with my conclusions. It would make me so mad because there would be nothing wrong with the grammar, spelling etc. but it would still not be an A. I even argued with them a couple of times over it because I had been led to believe that they wanted MY opinions and conclusions, not for me to regurgitate what THEY thought about the subject.

I think this is absolutely ridiculous. Personally I have never cared what colour my work gets marked with. To me the only thing that is important is the number circled at the top of the page. But then again I may just be callous from my years of suffering the red pen...

My view is that I don't really think using a slightly more aggressive colour is going to affect a child significantly I think there trying to come up with new excuses as to why lots of kids are stupid. And second red pen has never affected me, I never really god bad marks when I was young and on the occasions I did the fact it was in red made me easily see where I'd gone wrong with things

My main reaction to this was to wave an American flag and say "Woohoo! My country isn't the only one who sucks at education!"

Whatever happened to separating the McJanitors from the engineers and scientists? These days, the only kids whose self-esteem you hurt by these practices are the smart ones, who look at the way the grading system's set up and think "Fuck, why do I work so hard when I can just sit on my ass and get welfare like the rest of these lazy idiots?" Penalizing achievement reduces the number of achievers.

I can't say that I actually lost any self-esteem by the red pen... mostly because I rarely ever saw its characteristic markings on my papers... :p

Its not only in Australia, care bear teacher-advising boards over the whole world are adopting this and other care bear measures like it. As a soon-too-be teahcer i say...WTF? Are we makin pansies out of our children that cant stand failure? Soon they will be demanding we hug the failing students when they fail again.

Isn't black dark and "evil" and dark blue the colour of depression?
So all the writing of essays and the like are having a larger negetive impact before the aggresive "A+ Well Done" you get at the end?

The default text on computers should be a light green to represent growth and other positive things. I blame microsoft not changing the default colour for the rapid spread of depression and other mental conditions in the world.

I always did like seeing my work marked in green pen though...

If theres one thing about humans its that theres so many of us that a very small ratio of pants on head retarded people will be a very large number. Name a random thing thats more stupid that you can imagine (Eg computer mice cause cancer) and someone somewhere will find evidence to prove it. This is the case. People are too smothering of children nowadays. It matters so little what colour it is. If it wa up to these people children would be in small bubbles at all times with all noises being soft and gentle. Thing is its not the real world. In teh real world if you screw up you hear about it, and often not in a gentle way.
1. The idea is retarded
2. Its life. you get something wrong, you get told about it. END.
