Did you ever play a game wrong?

Whenever I buy an RPG I make a promise to replay the first 10 or 20 levels if I get bogged down. You have to strategize abilities and level-ups for what the game throws at you, and if you pick wrong, sometimes it is best just to go back to square 1. Playing through a second time I often catch much I missed the first time and pick up a lot of new things and am off to a much better start.

As for finishing a game wrong, if you finish it can't be all that wrong--but for RTSs I always promise I'm going to pay more attention to micro and learning unit special abilities, and I always end up focusing on economy, maxing tech and army size, and blindly rally-point a random mish-mash of spammed units to the enemy objective, while sitting back and watching the minimap.

If your talking about the training and not being able to do the stealth section, I was never able to do that either.

Em...the very first FIFA game, International Football (93? 94?)...there was a bug where the ref couldn't card you until you stood still and being 7/8 my friends and I used to run away from the ref and whoever got the longest won the match (we used to just tackle each other until the match was called off).

Wii-Fit, which was bought as a present about two years ago, I gave up when I realised I was playing the game the way I would a normal game "to win" rather than to exert myself. As such I was looking for ways to game the controls to make the actions either (like how you play most Wii games) so that was "playing wrong".

I was playing Pokémon games the wrong way for years.

I used to level up my starter and ignore all other pokemon untill I caught the legendary you come across in the main story line.

I never bothered to learn any of the intricaties to the Final Fantasy 8 fighting system. The complexity still baffels me - junction magic to power up certain stats in certain ways for maximum efficeny... makes my head spin. And it all seemed like a complete waste of time to bother improving your character when you were given a dozen summons. Those GF's were godlike, first of all when used they made your character invincible (health replaced by the GF's health), and they dealt 50x the damage a normal attack would do, killing every enemy instantly. And they even worked on bosses! So naturally, I never cast a single spell or used a single normal attack for the entire game, relying only on GFs. And that worked for me... until Disc 4 that is, when a boss that holds one of your party captive (game over if she dies), making my area-of-effect uber monsters were useless. My normal attacks were useless so I was stuck. Fuck FF8.

Any Final Fantasy ever.

I would just level up just enough to get past a certain area and just blaze through the game ignoring all the cool extra shit.
Needless to say I skipped all those lovely extra summons in FF7.

I have a couple of examples.
1. I played through mass effect 1 about 8 times without knowing there was a cannon.
2. On Read Dead Redemption you arn't suppose to kill teamates. Who knew?

I'm currently playing a new game of fallout3.

Very hard mode with all my skill points on unarmed.
That's right, unarmed on very hard.

Although, it is the most fun I've ever had with that game.

i remember in portal after you encounter your first rocket turret there's a hole (slightly to high) to crawl through.

and i think i had to think of something clever. instead i stacked computers and chairs to climb up to it.
LoL, I did the same, just dragged a chair from the office thing, didn't even notice the cubes above me :p

At the time I thought there must be a better way, but it worked
Cubes? Above? Hey, thanks!

I did that too! I still pile a couple of carefully-stacked office chairs there to get out. I'm not sure what the "correct" method of escape is...
If I'm thinking of the same section, i believe you're suppose to use portals so that the rocket turret blows a hole in the big tube which is right above the little space in the wall - i'm pretty sure a box falls out and then you can just climb on top of it and proceed.

When I was very young and used to play racing games, I assumed that getting a higher number was better. Therefore I always aimed to get 12th place.

I was a problem child.

Wait, so stacking chairs and computers isn't the right way to get past that hole? There's no other alternative!

Hitman.. When there wasn't a need for discrection and stealth, I went batshit-insane and massacred everyone with the dual guns as weapons of choice.

Search Bar approved. (As far as I could find.)

I don't really know how to phrase that better so I'll give you an example.

When I was a kid, my first fighting game was Mortal Kombat II. The only move I knew how to do was uppercut, so naturally, that's all I did. And, of course, I got my ass whooped every time. I would also start a match, and lose on purpose to find out who I'd be fighting, then I'd pick the same character under the impression that I'd have the advantage. Don't ask how I came to that conclusion.

So, have you ever played a game wrong?
When I started Oblivion I didn't know there was quick travel until about 15 hours in...

Even worse, in FF8, first time I played and understood nearly zero English, kept leveling up without knowing what the hell the Junctioning system was on about. I think the happiest gaming moment I had was when I figured it out.

My characters were stronger than the GFs, include Zell's overdrive and almost any boss'd die easily.

I get killed all the time. The aiming mechanic sucks hard. I'll probably make it eventually, but it's frustrating on the FIRST LEVEL.
Stay in the shadows when there's enemies around. You are completely silent when moving while crouched. Creep up behind enemies and knock them out with the prod. You don't really need to attack anyone until you get inside the statue. Actually you don't need to attack anyone pretty much ever, but you'll find it easier if you do.

The best way into the statue is to
scale the wall by climbing on the boxes and ladders around back, near the bunker with the sniper patrolling around it
but do try to explore all you can outside before going in. Certainly the guy in the bunker and the two guys on the pier are just asking for the prod.

The aiming is supposed to suck in the early game; you're a new recruit fresh out of the academy. You need to level up your weapon skills.

But yeah, you will die often. Apply liberal doses of quicksave and quickload.

Everyone found it tough the first time. But on your second play-through you'll be surprised how goddamn easy it is.
