Did you technically pay for PSN?

I was thinking earlier today when my friends and I were discussing the PSN...uh...problems. My friend argued that PSN users should get nothing because we don't pay for it. But, technically, don't we pay for it? The conversation made my think that PSN was included in a one time purchase with the PS3.

I'm not really sure about this and don't completely support the idea myself, but I thought it was interesting. Any other opinions?

You could also argue that you payed $300 or so for a subscription to PSN, and got the PS3 for free.

All depends on how you look at it. And knowing people, they'll look at it in a way where they feel they deserve compensation, even if they don't. Not saying PSN users don't deserve compensation, just commenting on what people do.

I don't think the players should be compensated, its a free service and Sony would be only throwing away money. But I would rather see some developers compensated who host their games on PSN.

Actually people who have paid for PlayStation Plus like yours truly should be compensated for lost time of the service.
Then again if anything Sony should be compensating everyone who has PSN for lost time, I mean that'd better than releasing a formal apology.

om nom nom.

OT: That's an interesting point but nah, seeing as you dont need PSN to play (most) games, I see it as an extra service that sony provides that i've managed to go without quite easily for a week. That doesnt mean I dont wish it would come back soon though.
And while compensation of some sorts would be great, I dont see any particular reason why we should actually get it.

Ive paid for downloadable games. What if whoever has my account information all of a sudden decided to change my info and I cant get my downloadable games or DLC anymore. Or my achievements. That would certainly piss me off.

Personally, having to pay eighty bucks a year for Xbox live, I'm inclined to say that PS3 users don't pay for PSN, with the exception of PS+ users. You're not actively supporting the service, and not keeping it going.

In my mind, the only people that deserve compensation are the PS+ users, and the game devs. Well, that is unless your credit card details were slipped. :S

I was squarely in the "it's free therefore we don't get shit" camp regarding compensation. But that was before I learned my information was stolen along with millions of others.

Now I'm not so sure. That's sort of a game changer.

Yup. I got a subscription to Playstation Plus. And I paid for the system, obviously. I expect at least an extension to make up for the days I couldn't utilize PS+ services.

I don't use the PSN though, yet I have an account because I can't update the console without it or some BS like that. I don't think I should be compensated, I'm not using the service nor am I paying for it.

They should only compensate the people who have the monthly Plus subscription, compensating everyone who doesn't have the subscription is ridiculous.

Personally I feel they don't owe their customers for lost time. That being said they need to think about how to do some damage control and bring some people back in as this is kinda a PR nightmare

I have to wonder how many XBL converts this situation will make. I feel for PSN users, I also feel for Sony in some respects but then, any PR is good PR as the saying goes even the negative.
I still think hackers who don't report bugs/exploits/security holes and pirates as bottom-feeders though who have now harmed the rest of the group immensely.

Considering one of their big advertising points was free online, yes. But I don't use it much so I don't care.

1. The service is free. They don't owe us anything for something we don't pay for. (PS+ should be receiving some compensation)
Actually, the customers DO pay for it, because the PS3 box advertises "free online gaming via the PSN" (or like statement).

Those selling points are part and parcel with the package deal. They DO owe PS3 owners that. I'm upset about it and I don't even own a PS3. (360 / PC gamer)

Nope. My PS3 came free with a 3D TV. I didn't pay jack shit for it or PSN. Hard to be disappointed. But still, getting some credit towards some of the games I had planned to download via PSN would be nice. I think crediting users with some cash in the PSN Wallet would be nice and build some good will after all this.
