I don't really know what I just listened to...

But I do know that I want those five and a half minutes of my life back please.

Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and pull a bit of thread necromancy here and see if I can get some feedback from my fellow Escapists and their opinions on the internet phenomenon known as Die Antwoord...

First, let me say that I've listened to most of their debut LP - streaming at thieir web site DieAntwoord.com [http://www.dieantwoord.com/] - and I really dig it. A lot. It's not quite like anything I've heard before.

I welcome someone to explain this shit to me. South African "rave rap"?
The name is rough or slang German for "the answer" - normally it's spelled die antwort.

I've done a bit of research about these guys, and it turns out that they're not everything that they appear to be on the surface. That is, they're not necessarily street level rappers or meth addicts. Art school drop outs is looking closer to the truth, not that it's a bad thing; discovering that actually made me respect them a bit more because it lent some legitimacy to them as artists in my view.

At any rate, there's a really interesting write up here (Die Antwoord is Fake and So What? [http://videogum.com/archives/backlashes/die_antwoord_is_fake_and_so_wh_112671.html]) that also has some videos they made as "Max Normal" that are pretty entertaining and warped, but very unlike the Die Antwoord that we've been introduced to recently.

So, what does everyone here think? Tired of all the recent hype - is Enter the Ninja just another viral video? Or are they just too vulgar for your tastes? Or are you like me, and you find that you can't stop listening to them?

'Antwoord' is the Dutch translation of the word answer. Afrikaans is a Germanic language originating from the Dutch spoken by settlers in the seventeenth century and blablabla (taken from wiki)
I'm guessing that it's got nothing to do with German.

Ah, my bad... Thanks for the clarification. My translator widget says that "antwort" is the German version, but it could be wrong.

Any opinion on the music itself?

Well, my ears started to bleed after the first minute, so I turned it off. Not my kind of music :p

Ah, sorry you didn't like it... This stuff is pretty out there to say the least. I really wasn't sure what to think of it at first myself, but I found the beats to be really infectious after listening a couple of times...

It may not be for everyone, but this guy pretty much rocks. His stuff is multi-layered, especially when looking across his career, and he has a statement regarding the music industry that is sardonic and self-effacing. That takes talent to pull off, and he did a decent job.

Did anyone else see the vault boy at some point in the intro, at about 28-30. Confused me to high heaven.

Also, I personally find this song quite erm... shit. Reminds of that crappy N-dubz stuff. These guys are 2 higher in my opinion though due to them not being big in my country, and lack of stupid hat. shame really, i hope that this hip-hop, urban, rap or whatever you call it doesn't catch on in the continent that gave me two of my favorite bands (well, not favorite but in the top 20).

Femi Kuti and The Bhundu Boys FTW!

Yeah, if you watch a video by them as Max.Normal, then follow it up with one from Die Antwoord, you can see that they're not just a one trick pony... I think we'll be hearing a lot more from these folks very soon...
