This is the reason COD 4 was so successful - forget great graphics, sound, gameplay - even the whole fun factor.

You could choose from 4 distinct difficulty settings - thats the reason it was so successful!

You should give a 'Platform Hell' freeware game like I Wanna Be the Guy [http://kayin.pyoko.org/iwbtg/] or A Slightly Difficult Game [http://www.yoyogames.com/games/show/59370] (which I made). Then you'll probably change your opinion.

The better Castlevania games are a study in "Good Difficulty" as they are hard, but its never the games fault and always yours, do better you twat!

I hate games where your win/loss is entirely dependent on luck (Dead Rising, Grand Theft Auto Series) or Grind (SMT: Nocturne).

Or where they simply make the enemies take more bullets to kill at higher difficulty (Timesplitters 2/3)

I love a game that gives me an honest challenge. I love the little surge of triumph that I get whenever I get past a particularly hard bit, but it's getting harder and harder to find games that give that feeling to me. So... is that it? Am I part of a dying breed of gamers? Amongst the last of those who seek challenge?
Mirror's Edge, Test of Faith Achievment... there is a challenge for you.
...On Hard difficulty. There, just upped your challenge.

You could try Dead Space on the hardest difficulty. Its kinda hard just cause of the lack of ammo you get in the game, I seem to run out even when im hitting the enemies perfectly and not wasting any shots.

Many reviewers complained about mirrors edge was too frustrating. There were some segments where I died continuously from doing something slightly wrong, but I didnt get frustrated.

One thing I often dont like in pc games is the quicksave functions since it often removes much of the challenge (its okay in half-life and games like, but in splinter cell 3 and games like far cry 2, it destroys much of the challenge when you can quickload if you screw up and perfect your sneaking and such). I like like the checkpoint system in halo more.

Liked ninja gaiden and N+s challenge too. Also I miss the old days with epic boss battles.

I agree wholeheartedly that mainstream games are getting easier to cater for the 'casuals', and while thats not always a bad thing when its infected even DMC im starting to worry.

Good. Games that are hard just for the sake of being hard are retarded. Doing the same mission over and over and over and over again isn't my idea of fun, I like to relax and play. Halo really had it down in this regard. Easy was easy, hard and legendary was there for those who like it hard.

If a game's too easy, increase the difficulty, or handicap yourself in some way. Like playing through the whole of Call of Duty 2 using just a pistol and melee whenever you can.
I've said this before, but I've done it, so it's not impossible.

I like Overlord: Raising Hell for this, because if you want more of a challenge, use the bare minimum of minions.
That's what I do if I think it's too easy.
But the difficulty is not simply based on what you pick on a menu, it's how you choose to challenge yourself.
So yes, the basic difficulty of games is getting easier, but it's also easier to give yourself a challenge with the addition of achievements and things like more difficulty levels.

Even Mega Man 9, which I was hearing complaints of 'too hard' from people about was relatively easy compared to previous Mega Man games.
That's strange. I actually found Mega Man 9 to be harder than the previous games. (except for the infamous final boss fight in Mega Man 7). There were several "jump too high and you get spiked, jump to low and you fall into a pit" areas that were tougher than Guts Man's platforms that drop you into the abyss. The bosses put up a decent fight (especially Plug Man and Magma Man).

And there's always the option of having no helmet to solve the problem of having too much health (when the bosses have to hit you 7 times to kill you, you can pretty much stand next to them and mash the fire button, and they'll usually die before you do. Tornado Man and the bosses of Mega Man 2 come to mind.), as well as the option of downloading Superhero mode, if you're willing to shell out the $1 for it.
