John C. Dvorak just nailed [http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/ZDM/story?id=2120624] something that has been bothering me all week.

Meanwhile this democratization of the news ? is seen by the idealists in the community as profound. I see it as increasingly dangerous, for a number of reasons.

You're such a reactionary, Russ. Viva la Revolucion! ;)

Personally, I think it is a grand experiment. Should be interesting to see how things unfold.

A thoughtful essay [http://edge.org/3rd_culture/lanier06/lanier06_index.html] on a similar subject - Wikipedia - appeared recently on Edge. Worth a read.

"You're such a reactionary, Russ. Viva la Revolucion!"

I thought about not reacting to this, just to disprove your point, but I'm afraid that you may be right.

Still, this Digg business is just crazy-talk. Crazy-talk, I say! I have a passing fondness for Kevin's project and I do wish him well, but I just can't see it working in the long term. Then again, I'm willing to admit that this may (perhaps) be a failure of my imagination more than anything else. We'll just have to wait and see. Because once I've gotten to be as cynical as Dvorak, all bets are off.
