With our technology and what we can make look real and whatnot, what's to say anything we see will be real or not? Matrix anyone?

Start wondering too loosely in this subject and you may find yourself in a mental institution.

Does it matter if it is real or not if you can't tell the difference? Just keep going as you are. If it's fake it doesn't change anything.

Synthetics are designed to be real. Using organic or chemically altered food doesn't seem to make much difference anyway

Read Voltaire's "Candide" and you'll get a pretty good answer-

"Shut up and work in the garden."

I'm not sure I'd call this epistemology, probably closer to existentialism. Well a bit of both really, since they are related.

Oh, and to the thread-starter. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SHUT UP ABOUT THE MATRIX! I had to deal with this shit for three years while getting my degree in Philosophy. The Matrix is 2 hours of fucking plagiarism, there are no original concepts in that film anywhere, they are copies from psychologists, philosophers, politicians, environmentalists, and several religions. The Matrix is worthless, I really can't stand people acting like 1999 was when these ideas were thought up, every single concept in the Matrix predates the film by a good 300 years at least, some by millenia.

God I hate that film so much!

Aha, but you're trying to make a Matrix reference based on the argument that the technology you see 'inside' is advanced? You so funny. Nah, nah... You're in a sewer on a drug trip, as per The Futurological Congress by Stanislav Lem.

You're approaching a strand of philosophy called Epistemology
And as for this, I heard about that in my Metaphysics course. And all I have to say is that, lately, people only use philosophy to paint whatever shape of the world is convenient for them, rather than addressing and dealing with what's in their face, regardless of whether it exists for them or not.

Also, Tron covered the same ideas as The Matrix. The Matrix was ... coherent :p

Frankly, I prefer the way it looks now. All the graphics are on the idealized side of the uncanny valley, which is the perfect place for gamers to flex their creativity muscles.

In addition, that period where we are in the uncanny valley with probably scare away any prospective gamers, maybe even current gamers. A very bad economic decision.

Even if you're stuck in a Matrix type world, you're STUCK in the world. Just play along, you will always be limited by your ignorance and imperfect perception. According to Buddhism, this world is nothing more than an illusion.

We will never be able to fake reality. It's just too big. However, we have the power to do the next best thing: alter people's perception of it. Fake photos, fake news articles, fake science, and other fakeries can be used to hoodwink people, and if you keep them from ever seeing the real deal, the fakes work just fine.

However, this is nothing new. People have been faking things for years. The War of the Worlds [http://history1900s.about.com/od/1930s/a/warofworlds.htm] scared people to death back in 1938, when computers weren't even the stuff of science fiction. Why do we need fancy tech when radio works just as well?

Also, the tech brings with it the power to dispel the illusion. Take Balloon Boy [http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/balloon-boy], for example. Our interconnected media helped spread the illusion, but when the truth came out, it dispelled it just as fast.

In short, technology does change the nature of the game, but it won't trap us in illusions unless we completely consent to that happening. Rather, tech makes everything happen faster. Expect the future to look a lot like the past, but on fast-forward.

I would have to say that I dont think about that because it would get in my way of actually getting something done in the life that I am living now... whether or not its real or anything- its better to just go with it.

Otherwise, you'll just become one of the loonies who say that HAARP controls the weather or serial killers are all from a satanic cult or fluoride water inhibits free will or Obama was born in Kenya
