Direct X problems

Last I tried to get my old Thief 1 game to work on my PC but alas it does not. While fiddling around with it it told me that there was a problem with my Direct X so I installed the version that was on the disc. Finally I gave up trying to make it work and so I resorted to playing Spore for a while. However it told me I didn't have the correct Direct X So I re-updated using this.

However now when I try to run Spore it simply tells me that "Direct X is not available" even though the updater clearly told me components are installed and ready for use" so now I can't run any of my games.

Can someone please help me out here? How can I get my direct X back?

You can get the latest version of DirectX [a href="http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35"]here[/a]. Hopefully it will let you overwrite the Thief version and fully install it.

If you're on Windows 7 or Vista, have you tried running the game in Compatibility Mode for an older system? If you haven't you can find the setting in the game shortcut's properties.

Hmm, apparently I have the current version of DirectX so there's no need to install a new one...

I tried compatibility mode but no matter what setting it still didn't like it.

I think I had that as well and it?s not a problem with Direct X but with spore ,so download all the patches and try again

TTLG has dedicated threads to getting old Dark Engine games like System Shock 2 and Thief running on OSs newer than Win98. I know from experience that its a royal pain, but I've managed to get all Dark Engine games running on XP and then on Windows 7 so I'm sure its possible.
