As almost no-one seems to know there is an adaptation of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency on tv tonight. (In the UK) They slipped it in under the radar for me as I have only seen one trailer for it in the middle of the night.

I am hoping it is going to be good as I love the source material.

What adaptations have the Escapists been surprised by, either by it being really good, or really bad,or just coming out of the blue without you realising.

I loved the modern day Sherlock Holmes they did.

Hehe. I have this growing uneasy feeling that it is going to be awful which would disappoint me no end. Won't know until I watch it later.

And Adams' works are pretty hard to capture on camera, I'll be surprised if they pull it off.
Same goes for Pratchett, haven't seen an adaptation of his that works as well as the books.

I have no idea what that Dirk Gently -stuff is about. I don't actually want to know.

As for memorable adaptations: I listened to an audio book of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. It was absolutely wonderfully produced, better than I ever would've assumed from an audio book (I'd not read the books before or after that, just listened to the awesome audio books). Then I heard there was a movie in the making off the first part of the His Dark Materials -trilogy: The Golden Compass. And it was such utter crap it made me rant and rage for a couple of days. A movie adaptation raping the book from cover to cover.
