Hi.

A few hours ago, I was playing Civ 5, with half the map having declared war on me a couple of turns ago. We then had a power cut, and unfortunately my laptop's batteries weren't connected at the time. Anyway, this is usually no cause of alarm, so i waited until the power came back on, reconnected the battery and mains and tuned on the laptop.

First, a series of electronic beeps sounded, roughly 20 or so. The computer then booted to EFI/BIOS. While poking around to see if anything obvious was wrong, it appeared that the boot list was empty of both Windows 8 and Ubuntu 12.10.
Not knowing what else to do, and after a couple of restarts, I plugged in the Win 8 recovery USB I had. The laptop booted into the Win 8 recovery mode successfully. I tried using Refresh/Reset, but both comands came up with words to the effect of 'your hard drive is locked'. So I dove into the command line to see what was up. My results can be seen here:

For anyone who cannot see the image, I went into DISKPART, and listed the disks and partitions. Only one disk came up with one partition; the USB stick.

tl;dr - After a power cut, Windows no longer recognizes my hard drive.

Anyone have any suggestions? It's kind of urgent, since I'm off to uni on Friday. I've ordered a new hdd just in case, and I'm in the process of setting up a Linux LiveUSB for further troubleshooting. My BIOS is by AMI, and there is no beep code for more than 11 beeps.

Help me techno-literate Escapists, you're my only hope.

EDIT: Ok, so the LiveUSB isn't working. I've found an old XP hdd in a usb adapter, so I'm giving it a go.

EDIT 2: Giving AWAR's suggestion a try. XP hdd did nothing. Also, if anyone suggests a solution that works and isn't along the lines of reinstalling Windows, I'll give you £10 somehow.

EDIT 3: After ringing ASUS support, the problem is fortunately covered by the warranty, so I'll hopefully have a fixed laptop in a fortnight or so. Massive embuggerance, given uni and everything, but should be manageable. Big thanks to all who posted suggestions.

You could try removing the HDD and putting it inside a desktop to see if it shows up there. That should give you an idea whether or not the hard drive itself has failed or the problem is elsewhere.

Also that beep code was more likely three or so unique beeps only repeated.

I may do that in the near future, but since the laptop may still be under warranty from ASUS, I'd prefer not to open it up just yet.
As for the beeps, they all sound identical and with the same time between them. One of the worst possibilities is that, as I had both Ubuntu and Win 8 installed on separate partitions, an 11-beep sound is set of twice to tell me that both partitions have had cache problems, which is very bad indeed.

What do you mean? You cannot go into repair mode with your Win 8 USB?

You mentioned you have a bootloader for Win 7 and Ubuntu. You can pop in a live CD and try these steps instead.

I've tried booting with a LiveUSB with Ubuntu. It booted straight into the BIOS and appeared in the boot list as

UEFI: USB DISK 2.0 PMAP

I have no idea what that means. It's first in the boot list, so it should go into Ubuntu, but it just doesn't. This is all with Secure Boot off, as well.

UEFI is the new BIOS and does not support USB boots very well. To add to your problems there is a bug with Ubuntu USB that can wipe out your win 7 boot sectors. You can try to upgrading your BIOS to newer version but with the problems that you have currently I would hold off on that and fix one thing at a time. You really need to get hold of CD version of something and remake your master boot record.

Edit now woken up a bit more and have read the thread properly. Win 8 use a different boot loader from win 7. When you get win8 recovery up and working try this http://superuser.com/questions/460762/how-can-i-repair-the-windows-8-efi-bootloader

Those assume that the BIOS can detect a hard drive to install the BCD on. My problem is worse than that, it doesn't detect a hard drive at all. Like it just disappeared.

If it's not even detected in the BIOS then it sounds like a hardware problem. If it might still be in warranty you should look into that.
