First off I'm not disappointed with SC: Conviction that's just the name of the thread.
I opened my Conviction collector's edition just now to find the Sam Fisher figurine is sealed in a plastic box on a cardboard background. WTF? Being the person I am I can never open that and that's bugs me. Assassin's Creed 2 figurine was loose but ol' Sam is stuck in that damn plastic box.
Has anyone ever had a disappointing experience with a special edition?

I have only ever bought the Gears of War 2 Limited Edition. It wasn't terrible but I looked at the DVD and art book once and never touched them again, if it wasn't for the fact that it was only £4/$6 more than the normal edition then I'd have probably regretted it.

I won't buy any more unless they give something really good though.

you couldn't wear the Halo 3 helmet that came with the legendary edition.

Seriously, thats why everyone bought the damn thing in the first place!

My friend actually only seemed to justify buying AvP (Alien vs Predetor) because of that facehugger he stuck to his girlfriends face while she was asleep.

Point being, yeah they can often suck, but you may find out what they come with and some of it can make the game's value to you so much more, even when the game itself doesn't quite branch that high in standard.

I haven't but I saw the Arkham Asylum one and feel sorry for anyone who bought that. Mainly the baterang was a horrible, cheap and nasty plastic thing.

I am always disappointed in special editions. That's why i stopped buying them. If i really wanted to have that "special edition" figure, then i would go on ebay and get it for $5 instead of the $10+ they charge for all the extra stuff i never use anyways.

I'm always really happy with what I get in special editions. I've yet to be let down by one. Maybe its just because I'm easy to please when it comes to games? =P

I was disappointed with the Splinter Cell SE too, I like to at least get the figure out once.

*Batman Arkham Asylum was very pants with a crap plastic batarang and no actual box for the game, just a digipak without a slip case.

*I bought the Bioshock 1 SE pre-owned off ebay (after they were long sold out) The figure arrived with the drill broken and a finger missing, the drill was not problem just glued it back, as for the finger that was never in the box. The figure was still sealed so it was factory faulty.

*One of Far-cry 2's SE selling points was that it came with a map, but there was a map already in the standard edition anyway?

*Assassin's Creed 1 the PAL edition just came with the game (with big ugly not to be sold separately on the front of the standard game box, ruining the box art) and a figure...
The NTSC version also came with making of DVD and a Penny Arcade comic too

*In the UK the SE of Metal Gear 4 was Play.com exclusive, mine arrived with huge scratch on the INSIDE of the display box window... Rang play straight away, they said that they had sold out nothing they could do, rang Konami UK they said sorry they sent all stock to Play.

*Dragon Age the PAL version never got a steel case (just standard gamebox with slipcase) and no cloth map

*Assassins Creed 2 the soundtrack is on the making of DVD only, should of put it on a CD...

*Fable 2 SE, I honestly can't remember how much stuff was removed from the original SE announcement and the gimped one that came out.

Yes I buy I lot of Collector's Editions, I "am" a collector, have a fetish for packaging
*edit* Halo 3 legendary Edtion, had a virtual artbook, the regular SE had a hard-back book

Dragon Age Collector's Edition definitely. Every other country got a metal case and a cloth map. Instead we got a worse cover than the normal edition, and a slipcase. Wasn't impressed.

Edit:
Fable 2, forgot about that one. In the end all we got was a slipcover, a different cover and an extra disk. Was disappointing.

I tend to buy anything that has the words: 'Final Fantasy' and 'Limited/Special Edition'.
The XIII one was pretty disapointing, I thought the art book was too small and I imagined the box was more like the clam shell packaging which came with Dissidia, but it was just a flimsy, shiny cardboard box that gets the lid bent when you open it. >.>

Every country other than America gets a better collector's edition of games than we do.

The OP must be from the UK or something, cause the US collector's edition here just came with a lame art book, a couple of in game items, and a crummy USB card that fell apart on me.

The only reason I bought it was because at Best Buy, the CE of SC Conviction was the same price as the standard.

For me though, my biggest dissapointment in buying a CE was (ironically) Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. I bought it because it was supposed to come with a soundtrack CD and a comic of the Penny Arcade Spy Manual (which was pretty lol.)

Instead, the soundtrack was samples on the "making of dvd" and the comic book, was in DIGITAL format on that same dvd.

Lame beyond lame.

In summary, I rarely, if ever, buy a collector's edition these days. There is practically nothing in them that ever justifies the $15-$20 price hike.

Fable 2. Was supposed to come with a Hobbe figurine, they decided to not do that and my commitment to procrastination made sure I didn't change my order in time.

Yeah that was another one, good point.

I had to sellotape the bottom flap shut as it kept on coming out.

Blazblues cardboard box was the same too.

I was pretty disappointed with RE5 Gold. Making someone pay $60 for a game and only giving a one-time use code for the DLC that you could easily buy for 12 bucks is just Evil. Even if you didn't have RE5 before, you could have bought a used copy for like, $30 and the DLC and saved yourself some Gold.

I bought the WotLK special edition and regretted it almost immediately. If the Special Edition comes with extra content, though, 'll try to get that one. I like getting the most out of video games.

Halo 3 Legendary edition, A friend of mines paid £150 for it thinking it would be super rare but i have seen it about the internet for £50, Still a pretty cool present though.

Kane&Lynch:Dead Men, Nothing to get excited about and the cardboard sleeve got ruined pretty fast!
